NEW CATALOG
The Scituate Town Library, along with all of the libraries in the Old Colony Library Network, are migrating to a new library catalog called Aspen Discovery this spring. We’re confident that you’ll enjoy the many new features of this system, and look forward to sharing it with you on April 30.
As part of this process, OCLN services will be offline from Monday April 27 through Wednesday April 29.

Our new system will be online on Thursday, April 30. Please note, in order to prepare for this change, the library will be closed from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on April 30.

Also, library services will be reduced April 27-29.

When visiting the library on those three days, you will be able to check out items, but will not be able to:
  • Check in items
  • Search the catalog
  • Reserve a museum pass (You can reserve a pass in advance for those days up until April 27th)
  • Book a study room online (Call or stop by the library instead!)
  • Place or suspend holds
  • Pay bills or fines
  • Make any changes to an account
  • Create new library cards
  • Look up patrons with ID (Please bring your library card!)
  • Use a public computer
Library services will also be unavailable from home during this time. You will not be able to:
  • Search the catalog
  • Place new holds
  • Renew items
  • Update your account
  • Access Libby/Overdrive, Kanopy, and any other electronic service requiring a library card
Our new system will be fully available on Thursday, April 30. Please be aware of a few anticipated changes:
  • Our public catalog ocln.org will have a completely new look and will offer new features.
  • Any letters in your PIN will be converted to uppercase. Please use uppercase letters when you log in to the new system. (If you have never changed your PIN, it is OCLN.)
  • If you have difficulty logging in, or have forgotten your PIN / password, you'll be able to change your password by supplying your library card number and email address. New passwords can be created with any combination of numbers and upper and lowercase letters. If you have forgotten or do not have an email address with us, please visit or call the library to have your password changed. The library will be able to assist with password changes according to local policy.
  • All of your checkouts and holds will be moved to the new system. If you elected to save your reading history, it will also be moved to the new system.
We hope to cause as little disruption as possible, but this is a big change for library staff, so please be patient with us as we all learn and adjust to our new system!

DISCONTINUATION OF HOOPLA

As of April 1st, Hoopla will be discontinued.

The library has made the difficult decision to suspend the service known as “Hoopla.” This service offers a platform to stream movies, music, e-books, and audiobooks that are all available instantly to download. Unfortunately, the library’s budget is more limited each year as we make investments in both e-resources and print resources. E-resources are especially challenging, as they are often two to three times more expensive than their print counterparts. Hoopla is a pay-per-use service, and because of its popularity, the usage has outpaced the library’s budget capacity at this time, even after making a significant reduction to the number of downloads available to patrons per month. If Town or State funding changes significantly, the library may revisit this decision. Please email Library Director Jessi Finnie with any questions or concerns.

PAJAMA DRIVE UPDATE!
150 Pairs of Pajamas! 🎉

Icons - Thank You - Gray
Our community absolutely showed up for this year’s Pajama Drive. Thanks to your generosity, we collected 150 pairs of brand-new pajamas that will be heading to Cradles to Crayons to help keep kids cozy.

A special shoutout to a few amazing teens who expanded the drive to their church and surprised us with a big batch of donations on the very last day. What a wonderful reminder of how kindness spreads!

Thank you to everyone who donated, shared the drive, and helped make this possible. Your generosity will make a real difference for children in Massachusetts. We’re so grateful for all of you!

A THANK YOU FROM SLF
A message from the Scituate Library Foundation

Thank you to everyone who supported the annual Scituate Library Foundation Mini Golf Fundraiser weekend! More than 300 patrons visited the library over the 2-day event, and helped raise impactful funds for improvements to the Children's Room and Teen Room! A special thanks to our flagship sponsor, Liberty Bay Credit Union, and the dozens of other local businesses that sponsored the mini golf holes and made donations to our raffle. We look forward to investing in exciting new projects in the Children's Room and Teen Room this year with the funds raised at the event.

Mary LoPiccolo’s Atelier Show in the Scituate Library Gallery
April 2nd to April 30th

Now showing in the Scituate Library Gallery are the works of Scituate Arts Association teacher Mary LoPiccolo and her “atelier.” (An atelier consists of an artist, usually a professional painter or sculptor, working with a small number of students to train them in art.) Mary has been an active member in both the SAA and the Front Street Art Gallery for decades. She works with students whose experience ranges from beginners to experienced artists. Many of her students have worked with her for a number of years and have gone on to win awards and participate in shows and art events around the South Shore and beyond. Both teacher and students relish the energy of creating in a group dynamic.

For further information on the SAA’s classes and workshops check out at their website or pick up a list of classes at Front Street Gallery. Additional examples of the instructor’s works can be found at the SAA’s Front Street Art Gallery, 124 Front Street, Scituate from Wednesday through Sunday, Noon to 5 PM.

FIND YOUR NEXT READ!
Not sure what to read next?  Library staff is here for you!

If you've been a long-time reader of our newsletter, you've probably seen the "staff picks" section of suggestions at the bottom. But did you know there are lots of other ways to discover your next great read with the help of library staff and library services? Here are a few ideas for you!

Ask a Librarian! We are always happy to help you find a great book to read. We are available to chat with you about what you've recently read that you've liked and then match you up with some selections we think you'll enjoy! Just ask at the circulation desk and we will be happy to assist.

Follow us on Facebook! to get multiple reading lists a week! These book lists are thoughtfully curated by Scituate Town Library staff.

Request a BookMatch or a Book Bundle/Pack. The Library staff created two services for patrons who would like some help selecting their next great book. BookMatch is available for kids and adults and involves filling out a quick questionnaire about your reading habits. Staff then sends you back a list of titles we think you might like!  If you'd like to be surprised by a bag of books to borrow, you can fill out the Book Bundle (kids) or Book Pack  (adults) request forms. We'll put titles in a bag for you to pick up! This is a great option if you're in a hurry and want a grab & go experience.

And for teens, we have two services: Books & Bites-- which is a bag with books and snacks; and Book & Movie Night bag. Pick from our selection of book-to-movie adaptation bundles and we'll package up for you a book, movie, and a movie night snack pack.

Have you tried Novelist? NoveList is a powerhouse of a database designed for readers and built by librarians!  With NoveList you can really fine tune your reading selections, especially if you enjoy specific genres and subgenres. Try NoveList in order to:

Python's Kiss: Stories
by Louise Erdrich

From Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award-winning author Louise Erdrich, a captivating collection of short stories. Written over the past two decades, Louise Erdrich's magnificent story collection features a range of characters--a tribal newsletter editor whose son tells her a story that nothing in her experience can encompass, immigrant farmers whose tenuous hold on the earth, and sanity, is challenged, and ordinary people, bird lovers, artists, grade-school teachers, and romantics. A man is confronted with a folk-singing thief. A woman enters a corporately owned afterlife to seek revenge on her father. Accompanied by specially commissioned artwork by Aza Erdrich Abe--an intimate and revelatory creative collaboration between mother and daughter--these stories offer an opportunity to celebrate the wisdom and brilliant, wide-ranging imagination of one of America's most important writers.

Snowshoe Kate and the Hospital Built for Pennies by Margi Preus
Snowshoe Kate and the Hospital Built for Pennies
by Margi Preus

Newbery Honor winner Margi Preus and illustrator Jaime Zollars shed light on a trailblazing doctor known as the Angel on Snowshoes in this inspiring picture book biography. Dr. Kate Pelham Newcomb (or Dr. Kate, as she was known to her patients) was a doctor in rural northern Wisconsin during the early 1900s, a time when very few women practiced medicine. Because the nearest hospital was over two hours away and the snowy roads were often impassable, Dr. Kate frequently traveled many miles by snowmobile or snowplow to reach her patients. Sometimes she even went by snowshoes, which lead to her nickname, the Angel on Snowshoes. In her years as a doctor, she delivered an astonishing 4,000 babies, and those same children later played a key role in the Million Penny Parade, a massive grassroots fundraiser inspired by Dr. Kate's lifelong efforts to build a hospital in her community.

The Joy of Snacking: A Graphic Memoir about Food, Love & Family
by Hilary Fitzgerald Campbell

From standup comedian, New Yorker cartoonist, and the author of Murder Book comes this fresh comics memoir about being a snacker in a world of foodies. With equal parts humor and unflinching honesty, Hilary traces her life story through food: from her childhood as the ultimate picky eater, her teenage and young adult years of disordered eating, and finally learning to love herself again. Punctuated throughout with ridiculous (but very real! and important!) snack recipes like a baggie of goldfish and burnt toast, Campbell captures the reality of growing up in a woman's body in the '90s and '00s in how it shaped her life in work, friendship, and dating.
