WELCOME OUR NEW DIRECTOR, SARA SLYMON! Please welcome our new director, Sara Slymon to the Quincy community. Ms. Slymon brings with her 29 years of experience in libraries, an extensive background in project management, and a tireless focus on building inclusive environments. Her approach to library services is progressive and innovative. Ms. Slymon recently completed an 8 year tenure serving as the Director of the Public Library of Brookline, which included the management of multiple renovation projects (including the Coolidge Corner Branch, the Youth Services spaces, and the design of a new Children's Garden), strategic planning, and an extensive focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion training for staff and Board members alike. As Director of the Turner Free Library in Randolph, she secured funding a $2.5m renovation, and created a new, comfortable environment with the opening of their café. As Boston Public Library's Mattapan Branch Librarian, she inspired a new wave of library users by introducing exciting teen programming, created new services and partnerships in the community, and helped to plan and execute a new branch location on Blue Hill Ave. Her studies in journalism, integrative technology, and library science lend themselves to her outreach efforts and leadership style. She looks forward to serving the people of Quincy in her new role. If you see her making her way around the library assisting staff -- say hello!

Newspaper Digitization Project The Library has digitized three of our historic newspapers published from 1837 to 1915: This project was funded with a generous gift to the TCPL Foundation from local historian, Wayne G. Miller. Additionally, CPA grant funding of $110,000 will provide support for preservation microfilming and digitization of nearly a dozen historic newspapers, including the Quincy Advertiser (1884-1914) and the Quincy Telegram (1909-1927).

Meeting every Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 AM, participants of the Walk & Talk program enjoy walking around Quincy Center, having casual conversation and learning about the area. Participants often visit local places of interest like the QArts Gallery, the Dorothy Quincy Homestead and nearby parks. Special thanks to the firefighters of Engine 1 Headquarters for the fun and informative tour our group enjoyed this summer! Whether you are interested in practicing your English or are someone who enjoys meeting people from other cultures, all are welcome to join our Thursday walks! Children are welcome, as well, but must be accompanied and supervised by a caretaker at all times. The walks are always posted on the library's public online calendar. "Lava shoots in the air, then bubbles down mountains, flattening, burning, and boiling everything in its path. The destructive forces of volcanoes are terrifying and well-known. But what about their other forces? Volcanoes can spur new growth of plants and trees. In the water, they create an environment where coral reefs and sea life can thrive. In fact, the meeting of volcanic fire and ocean water gave way to life on Earth. Award-winning children's science author Mary M. Cerullo brings her excellent research and signature storytelling style to the dynamic subject of volcanoes. Stitching science, history, and mythology together, Cerullo explores these explosive wonders of nature and reveals the secrets they've been keeping since the beginning of the world, " [Novelist].
