Sunday Hours Are Back!
 
 
Starting on Sunday, September 12, the Main Library will resume regular Sunday hours from 1:00-5:00 p.m.
North Quincy Update
 
Work is progressing on the North Quincy Branch renovation. While we are still projecting a Fall opening, supply chain delays have delayed our plans to reopen the branch in September.
 
Thank you for your continued patience--we know it will be worth the wait!

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend any of all of the sessions in this multi-part program that teaches and empowers aging adults and those who care for them with skills and ideas that decrease falls and increase independence. This evidence-informed program will discuss practical and proven exercises that promote a health and well-being. Each 60-minute session will build upon the previous one(s) to deepen your aging strong experience, but you can attend any or all, depending upon your availability. They will be recorded for later viewing and sharing and made available on the library's YouTube channel.

Just about everyone is familiar with the popular Law and Order TV series. During each episode a case is followed from the commission of the crime, through the police investigation, and finally to the courtroom. 
 
In this slide show, David Kruh brings Law & Order to Boston by looking at three high-profile cases from three eras of the city's history: The Boston Massacre, The Parkman Murder, and the Boston Strangler. 
 
Together, we'll look at the crime (or crimes), follow the investigation, and wind up in court, where we will argue the case and hear the verdict.
 
 
Mid-Autumn Festival  Chinese Exchange Exhibit Program (Online)

As part of the Mid-Autumn Festival Chinese Calligraphy Exchange Exhibit, going on during the month of September at the Thomas Crane Public Library, calligraphy lovers and anyone with an interest in learning more is invited to a special program by Mr. Yunhua Ju, a calligrapher sojourning in the United States and a visiting scholar to the University of Massachusetts. Yunhua Ju's five styles calligraphy works make up the the majority of the exhibit, along with one work by Ren Li, an IB Chinese teacher at Brockton High School. 
 
Audience-members will be invited to listen to Ren Li discuss "American Calligraphy Teaching Practice" followed by a talk by Yunhua Ju on "How to Enjoy a Chinese Calligraphy." There will be an opportunity to ask questions of both speakers.

English Talk Time is the library's ESOL program for adults. We offer conversation and citizenship classes. Fall classes will meet online and in-person. Our conversation classes are a great way to improve your English, meet new people and connect with your community! Citizenship classes help participants feel prepared and confident for their naturalization interview. To enroll in a fall class, please attend New Student Registration. We look forward to welcoming new students this fall!
 
Look for our registration table outside the library near the main entrance on Washington Street.   
 
 
Welcoming Week!
September 10-19
 
Welcoming Week is an annual, national campaign and celebration led by an organization called Welcoming America to showcase the growing movement of communities striving to be more welcoming places for all, including immigrants. By fostering mutual respect and cooperation between new and long-time residents, Welcoming Week brings people together in the spirit of inclusivity to create a community where everyone can truly thrive. 
 
This year’s theme, “Belonging Begins with Us,” provides an opportunity to let all members of our diverse city know that they are welcome and valued members of our community. Here are a couple of ways the library will be participating in the celebration of Welcoming Week:
 
English Talk (and Walk!) Time
Tuesday, September 14, 10:00-11:15 a.m.
 
Join us for English Talk (and Walk!) Time. English Talk Time is the library’s ESOL conversation group program. Participants will take a nice walk around Quincy Center while having casual conversation to practice communicating in English. In celebration of Welcoming Week, this Walk and Talk event is open to anyone from the community who is interested in meeting and chatting with new people. This is a nice opportunity for Quincy's new and long-time residents to connect in a casual, friendly setting. 
Meet on the lawn outside the Washington Street entrance of the Main Library in Quincy Center. In the event of inclement weather this program will be rescheduled.

Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts- Quincy at the Thomas Crane Public Library is a non-profit educational program that offers free tutoring to adults in basic reading and writing through a regional network of trained volunteers.

Are you studying for your GED or HiSET diploma? Enroll in one of our two High School Equivalency online classes to prepare for the GED test or HiSET exam.
 
Do you have the time and the desire to follow an online study program (3 to 4 hours a week) and meet with a tutor on a weekly basis (once a week for 2 hours at the library or online)?

This 6-week program peer-led event is designed to empower teens with an anti-racist skillset that will allow them to be active and engaged in their communities. Teens looking to engage in social justice settings are encouraged to register. Participants will earn 1 1/2 hours of community service per session.

Campaign details:  No Humans Allowed! For our Tails & Tales summer reading theme this summer's Dungeons & Dragons campaign will take place in a land where humans are the unusual ones and minotaurs, centaurs, leonin, and more are commonplace. Characters will be provided for this one-shot session.
