During the summer the Massachusetts Legislature passed An Act Regarding Free Expression, S3241 which was then signed into law by Governor Healey. It is also known as the Freedom to Read Bill. Fittingly, the signing was held in America’s first and oldest lending library in Franklin, MA. In 1790 Benjamin Franklin had donated 116 books to the town which then made the books available free of charge to residents.
Another prominent benefactor and believer in the importance of libraries was Andrew Carnegie, who rose from poor immigrant to wealthy steel magnate. Between 1883 and 1929, Carnegie’s foundation funded the construction of 2,509 libraries world-wide, 1,681 of which are in the United States Rockland’s Memorial Library is one of 43 Massachusetts Carnegie-funded libraries. In commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Carnegie’s foundation donated $10,000 to each Carnegie Library still in existence.
The actions of both the Carnegie Foundation and the Massachusetts Legislature remind us that free and publicly accessible libraries and the freedom to read are vital to maintaining a strong and informed democracy. |
