Animal World Experience
Friday, August 4, 11:00 am
 
Matt Gabriel will introduce a selection of wild animals and teach the audience about their lives and habitats.  After the presentation, there will be an extra hour for audience members to hold and pet some of the animals.  
 
Right now, this program is full, but you can still add your name to the waitlist!
 
Teddy Bear Yoga

Mad Science--Radical Robots
Wednesday, August 9, 3:00 pm
For children ages 8 to 12 only
 
Children become wrapped up in the world of robotics! Volunteers act out a robot, remote control device, and an automaton. A reading and writing robot draw shapes, detects objects, and tracks lines. Children circulate learning centers to control an automaton through sound, move a robot through a maze, and use wireless controls to move bug-like devices! A soft and snuggly robotic seal pup is passed around for all to pet. Children build the Robot Hand to take home.
This workshop is for children ages 8 to 12 only and there are limited spaces.  Please only register children within this age range.

WEBINAR: Giants of Science Series.  Enrico Fermi
Wednesday, August 2 at 7:00 pm
 
Enrico Fermi, born in September 1901, was an Italian and naturalized-American physicist.  In 1938 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his demonstrations of the existence of new radioactive elements produced by neutron irradiation, and for his related discovery of nuclear reactions brought about by slow neutrons. In January 1939, after receiving the Nobel Prize he moved to Columbia University and eventually the University of Chicago where he led the first controlled nuclear chain reaction. Enjoy an engaging and informative presentation on the life and work of this world changing physicist.

WEBINAR: Seed Saving 
Thursday, August 4 at Noon
 
During this presentation we will talk about the reasons for saving your own seeds and learn some of the basic techniques for ensuring genetic purity. We will include discussions about the home garden plants from which seeds can be easily saved and stored for future use. Led by Gretel Anspach, a Trustee of the MA Horticultural Society, a Lifetime Master Gardener with the MA Master Gardener Association. She won the MMGA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. Gretel established and maintains a 20,000 square foot food production garden that has provided fresh produce to the Marlboro and Maynard Food Pantries for the last ten years.

Have you been asking yourself "what does culture war even mean" and "what does it mean to be 'woke'?"  Please join us for this conversation with Professor Gail Sahar, author of "Blame and Political Attitudes: The Psychology of America’s Culture War".  Questions about the causes of events, from terrorist attacks to mass shootings to economic and public health crises dominate conversations across the US. Recent research in social psychology outlines the process we use to identify the causes of such events, reveals how we determine who is responsible, & documents the far-reaching consequences.  Gail Sahar is the Jane Oxford Keiter Professor of Psychology at Wheaton College in Norton, MA. She earned her Ph.D. at UCLA and has been teaching social and political psychology while researching attitudes toward controversial social issues for over 25 years.

WEBINAR: Inside the Mysterious Lindbergh Baby Kidnapping

Explore the trial of Richard Hauptmann, the accused kidnapper of the baby of aviator Charles Lindbergh. The Hauptmann trial is among the most famous trials of the 20th century. Led by the Honorable Dennis J. Curran, retired Massachusetts Superior Court Justice. Curran is a member of the national Board of Advisors of The Lincoln Forum, a Life Member of the Surratt Society, and a Fellow of the Massachusetts Historical Society, and has taught at Tufts University, Roger Williams University School of Law, and Brown University.

IN PERSON!! The Civil War in the Collections of the Hanover Historical Society
Wednesday, August 16 at 6:30 pm

Join Hanover Historical Society intern Sophie Jones, a Hanover resident and student at the University of Maryland, for a talk about Hanover and the Civil War.  
 
Drawing on the Historical Society's collection of objects, photographs, documents and items related to the Civil War, the talk will present some of the prominent figures and the battles they were involved in, letters from soldiers, the founding of the town's Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) post. and other significant events that took place during and shortly after the war.
