Toddler Time (18-35 months) Wednesday mornings at 10:15 am Simple picture books, big books, finger plays, songs and movement for children 18-35 months with a parent/caregiver. Drop-in, no registration needed.

Picture Book Time (3-4 year olds) Monday mornings at 10:15 am Listen to a picture book, then do a simple craft. Three-and-four-year-olds are generally not accompanied by caregivers. Drop-in, no registration needed.

Patty-Cake Time (babies) Monday mornings at 11:00 am Nursery rhymes with movement, board books, big books, finger plays and more for babies newborn to 17 months with a parent/caregiver. Drop-in, no registration needed.

Children's Yoga Class (3+ year olds) Monday mornings at 11:00 am Miss Christine from Little Bee Yoga Co. is excited to share the magic of yoga with John Curtis Library families!! This fun class provides a beautiful bonding experience between the adult and child. Each class is 45 minutes. The class is geared toward children ages three to six years, but all ages are welcome to participate. Please bring a yoga mat or towel. Drop-in, no registration needed.

Story Time (5 & 6 year olds) Monday afternoons at 4:30 pm After-school story time for five- and six-year-olds. Longer picture books and sometimes a craft. Drop-in, no registration needed.

Chess Club (6+ year olds) Monday Nights, October 6 & 20 at 6:00 pm Doug Southall leads a chess club for children age six and older. The meeting will begin with a brief lesson on some aspect of the game, followed by free play. Drop-in, no registration needed.

Lego Day (4+ year olds) Tuesday afternoons at 4:00 pm Build with Legos for an hour. Finished creations may be put on display in the Children's Room. For ages four years and older. Drop in; no registration required.

VIRTUAL: A Look At Banned & Controversial Theatre Productions Monday, October 6 at 2:00 pm Explore several controversial works of theatre that were banned, including Sholem Asch’s turn of the 20th Century play, God of Vengeance, Lillian Hellman’s The Children's Hour, and Mae West’s plays Sex and The Drag, as well as Moises Kaufman’s The Laramie Project. Examine the importance of theatre in creating opportunities for conversations on controversial topics. Led by Stephen Nachamie, an award-winning stage and film director who has worked on Broadway, Off-Broadway, regionally and internationally. This program is in recognition of Banned Books Week. VIRTUAL: Authors Mansi Shah and Weina Dai Randel Discuss Saving Face and The Master Jeweler Monday, October 6 at 7:00 pm We welcome authors Mansi Shah and Weina Dai Randel to our virtual stage! They will be discussing Mansi's new book, Saving Face and Weina's latest release The Master Jeweler. Although very different in content, we'll be discussing the importance of their stories, how they delve into diaspora issues, the impact of their books on our thoughts and understanding of the world, and their path to publishing. VIRTUAL: Norman Rockwell On Art Thursday, October 9 at 10:30 am “America’s favorite illustrator” is best known for his relatable scenes of modern American life with subjects selected for their broad appeal: families, holiday celebrations and young love. Rockwell was also fond of making paintings about painting and the art world in general, topics one wouldn’t necessarily associate with commercial art for the middle class. This program considers the various ways Rockwell explored art making and museums over the course of his career, with a healthy dose of the artist’s good humor. VIRTUAL: The Poetic and Musical Genius of Taylor Swift Thursday, October 16 at 7:00 pm Harvard professor Stephanie Burt will deliver a fascinating presentation based on her brand new book, Taylor's Version: The Poetic and Musical Genius of Taylor Swift. Burt, who is a poet and literary scholar, will offer an insightful and heartfelt critical appreciation of Taylor Swift, her body of work, and the community that her art has fostered. Drawing from her 2024 Harvard course, Taylor Swift and Her World, as well as from her years as a Swiftie, Burt will examine Swift’s particular form of genius – not the destructive genius of tortured poets, but the collaborative and joyful genius of an artist who has mastered her craft. Burt is the Donald P. and Katherine B. Loker Professor of English at Harvard University. Her work appears in the New York Times Book Review, the New Yorker, and the London Review of Books, among others. Her other books of poetry and literary criticism — fourteen in all — include We Are Mermaids, Advice from the Lights, and Don’t Read Poetry: A Book About How to Read Poems. Banned Books Week October 5-11, 2025 Banned Books Week is a yearly awareness campaign promoted by the American Library Assn. and Amnesty International, that celebrates the freedom to read, draws attention to banned and challenged books, and highlights persecuted individuals. Held in late September or early October since 1982, the United States campaign "stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of those unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints to all who wish to read them" and the requirement to keep material publicly available so that people can develop their own conclusions and opinions.
