Genealogy Records at the Norfolk County Registry of Deeds
This month, on Saturday, December 9th @ 10:00 am in Logan Auditorium, we will be joined by Norfolk County Register of Deeds Bill O’Donnell to learn more about using land records for genealogical research.
The Registry of Deeds is the principal office for real property records in Norfolk County, cataloging and housing more than 10 million land documents dating back to 1793. Under Bill O’Donnell the Registry of Deeds has made the research process easier through its History Comes Alive Transcription Program where all the Registry documents from 1793 to 1900 have been transcribed from old cursive writing into clearly readable and easy-to-read and print.
Register O’Donnell will tell us how to use land records for genealogical research, followed by a question and answer session. After his talk, two of his assistants, Noel and Jonathan, will be able to answer any additional questions and look up documents and print them out.
William P. O'Donnell of Norwood is Register of Deeds for Norfolk County, and by virtue of that office, serves as an Assistant Recorder of the Massachusetts Land Court.
A graduate of Boston College Law School and Georgetown University, O'Donnell was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar in 1985. He served as an Assistant District Attorney for Norfolk County, as well as private practice, which included real estate, conveyancing and related areas. He serves as president of the Massachusetts Registers of Deeds Association. |

Brown Bag Book Club
This month's selection is The Jane Austen Society by Natalie Jenner. The Brown Bag Book Club meeting will be held in Logan Auditorium, 12:00 to 1:00 pm on Wednesday, December 13th.
One hundred and fifty years ago, Chawton was the final home of Jane Austen, one of England's finest novelists. Now it's home to a few distant relatives and their diminishing estate. With the last bit of Austen's legacy threatened, a group of disparate individuals come together to preserve both Jane Austen's home and her legacy. |
These people—a laborer, a young widow, the local doctor, and a movie star, among others—could not be more different and yet they are united in their love for the works and words of Austen. As each of them endures their own quiet struggle with loss and trauma, some from the recent war, others from more distant tragedies, they rally together to create the Jane Austen Society.
Please register in advance to receive the meeting reminders and discussion questions by email.
Copies of the print edition in regular and large print, as well as audiobook on CD, will be available at the library's Circulation Desk one month ahead of the meeting. |

Second Thursday Book Club
The Second Thursday Book Club will meet on Thursday, December 14th from 7:00 pm to 8:45 pm in the Reading Room on the Main Level to discuss Lucy by the Sea by Elizabeth Strout.
With her trademark spare, crystalline prose—a voice infused with “intimate, fragile, desperate humanness” (The Washington Post)—Elizabeth Strout turns her exquisitely tuned eye to the inner workings of the human heart, following the indomitable heroine of My Name Is Lucy Barton through the early days of the pandemic.
As a panicked world goes into lockdown, Lucy Barton is uprooted from her life in Manhattan and bundled away to a small town in Maine by her ex-husband and on-again, off-again friend, William. For the next several months, it’s just Lucy, William, and their complex past together in a little house nestled against the moody, swirling sea.
Rich with empathy and emotion, Lucy by the Sea vividly captures the fear and struggles that come with isolation, as well as the hope, peace, and possibilities that those long, quiet days can inspire. At the heart of this story are the deep human connections that unite us even when we’re apart—the pain of a beloved daughter’s suffering, the emptiness that comes from the death of a loved one, the promise of a new friendship, and the comfort of an old, enduring love.
Book club books are available for pick up at the circulation desk about one month before the discussion date and are due back on the Thursday meeting date.
All readers are always welcome!

in a hail of gunfire as its members turned on one another. The members of the eleventh expedition returned as shadows of their former selves, and within weeks, all had died of cancer. In Annihilation, the first volume of Jeff VanderMeer's Southern Reach Trilogy, we join the twelfth expedition."
