Book Nook Update

Dear Friends and Fellow Readers,

After many years of successful book sales, the Friends will not be having a Spring Book Sale this year. The Friends of the Kingston Public Library no longer have the members needed to do the preparation and clean up for a sale, even with the help of our loyal group of volunteers.

We are very willing to assist any new readers who are able and willing to take on the task of running the Book Sale. If interested, please contact Donald Colon, Library Director, at dcolon@kingstonma.gov, or Dale Foley at dalef311@gmail.com.

With the help of your donations of "gently used" books, we are continuing to maintain the Book Nook within the library, selling adult and children's books at our book sale prices. We are not accepting CD's and DVD's at this time.  Be sure to check the Nook just around the corner from the circulation desk.

April Art Exhibit:
Art Selections From Silver
Lake Middle School

Our featured artists in April are selections from Silver Lake Regional High School’s Studio Art 2 class, comprised of sophomores and other upper grades. The exhibit features more than 30 Trompe-l'œil pet portraits, inspired by the students own pets, using acrylic paints.

Trompe-l'œil is an artistic term that translates to "deceive the eye" in French for the optical illusion of a three-dimensional object on a two-dimensional surface. In this project we created the illusion of a real frame in a Trompe-l'œil style.

“The painted frames not only enhance the overall presentation of our artwork, but they also create a sense of depth and dimension,” said teacher Rachel Maguire.

Inspiration was taken from personal photographs of student’s pets. The goal was to capture the unique personalities and characteristics of different pets, down to the high level of detail for fur and whiskers. Three-dimensional photo references added shape, textures, layers, and colors to achieve a realistic appearance. Students also experimented with different techniques and materials, such as blending, strippling, paint markers, and sharpies to create different textures and effects.

“We are thrilled to share our pet portraits with our community. Our pet portraits represent the love and connection we have with our furry friends,” said Maguire.

“Pets are more than just companions; they bring joy, comfort, and unconditional love into our lives. Through our artwork, we hope to inspire others to appreciate and cherish the animals in their own lives.”

The exhibit will be on view in the library's gallery throughout April. The library is open Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays 10am to 5pm and Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays 10am to 8pm.
