Sunset on Summer Reading

As we begin wrapping up our annual Summer Reading Program, we are ecstatic to say that this year's turnout was one of our best yet! During the first two days of sign-ups, we had 251 people register for the program- and that was just the first two days! Throughout the summer, we have welcomed both new and returning patrons, with many expressing how excited they were to start their summer on the right foot- or, rather, book- and have the chance of earning a prize while they're at it! With informative programming centered on treating our environment with care, reusing materials that we already own, and reducing the waste we contribute to the environment, the Kingston Public Library's focus on sustainability was fully embraced, and we are excited to contribute more to the conversation moving forward.

The Summer Reading Program is running until August 16th, after which winners will be announced and prizes distributed! Until then, keep reading!

Join us as staff from Terra Cura, Inc. (Plymouth) visit the library for this enriching program!  Registration is required due to limited space.

Earth care, people care, and fair share— small changes create far-reaching results through permaculture. Jackie will describe what backyard permaculture means to her while giving examples of what it looks like at her home in Plymouth. She will talk about how you can integrate permaculture principles into your own home, which can include organic gardening, sheet mulching, composting, capturing rain water and creating an herb spiral. She will be highlighting a recent garden installation at the Plymouth Public Library and other sites in Plymouth, and will also touch upon ways for each of us to become producers rather than consumers with hands-on activities.

This program is part of the 2024 Adult Summer Reading program.  All attendees will be eligible for a free raffle ticket for the Gardening & Sustainable raffle basket summer reading prize.

Author Talk with Greg Skomal
Tuesday, August 6th - 6:00pm
At the Adams Center

Join us as we host Dr. Greg Skomal, author of "Chasing Shadows: My Life Tracking the Great White Shark," who released his non-fiction novel last year. Skomal is one of the leading great white shark experts in the country, who revealed the true nature of these mysterious apex predators, as well as the fascinating story behind their history and resurgence.

With its quaint villages, local restaurants serving up lobster rolls, and miles and miles of warm, sandy beaches, Cape Cod, Massachusetts is famous for being America’s carefree seaside getaway. But in August 2012, the first confirmed white shark attack in almost eighty years occurred in the region. As shark sightings quickly began to increase on Cape Cod and elsewhere, and large beachside billboards warning about the growing shark population became a common sight, a boogie boarder died after being attacked by a great white shark in Cape Cod’s shallow waters.
What had changed to cause news of human-shark interactions to go from being a rarity to being the new normal? As some citizens called for shark culls, nets, drone surveillance, and other extreme solutions, interactions between local residents and scientists, politicians, and those responsible for public safety became tense and frantic.

Skomal, a shark biologist whose lifelong passion has been to gain a more refined understanding of great white sharks, was at the center of it all. This is the story of the great white shark’s return to the eastern seaboard, told through the life of the scientist who found himself in the oftentimes thankless position of having to balance conservation efforts and the drive to do important science with panic and fear in the court of public opinion. Skomal has spent decades on a quest to tag, track, and demystify this animal, using every high- and low-tech method at his disposal, including those he invented, and he frequently comes face-to-face with these shadows of the deep. He leaves no stone unturned in his pursuit of the secrets behind the largely unknown lives of these charismatic creatures and in his duty to solve the intricate puzzle of how humans can coexist alongside them.

Chasing Shadows is a too-rare conservation success story about restoring an apex predator to an ecosystem that provides a profound, new understanding of a beast so notoriously fierce that it’s nearly impossible to imagine how vulnerable it truly is.

Books will be on sale following the author talk. You can learn more about this book here.

August Art Exhibit

Charles Sorrento
Born a lifelong artist, Charles Sorrento has dedicated his life to perfecting his craft. Sorrento believes that this goal will never be attained, but the pursuit has a constant enjoyment and challenge. Obtaining his degree at the quintessential "Boston" schools of Mass College of Art, the Vesper George School of Art, and Northeastern University, his work reflects a realistic approach to his surroundings and experiences. He began as an art teacher in 1976 and hasn’t looked back. Sorrento has influenced many young people and adults as educator, mentor, and artist. His mediums vary as much as his subject matter. This exhibit is a small collection of some of his watercolors.

Anita Uhlan
Anita grew up on Long Island, New York in a small town called Sag Harbor. She was lucky enough to be in an environment full of music, art, photography, and books. In high school, she graduated with three majors: art, science and math. Anita attended BOCES (Adult Education) and received a Journeyman’s Certificate in Offset Lithography. Anita then moved to Connecticut, where she worked as Production Manager at Kopple Color Graphics, Hamden, CT for the production of films for printing of magazines including Yacht Racing, Tennis Magazine, and Rock Scene Magazine. She attended Paire College, taking graduate classes in Fine Art. Anita loves art in all its forms and has just started working with watercolors again after a break.
