Libraries are often asked to help find titles based on a few pieces of information. A librarian in Oshkosh posed a question to a state-wide library listserv with the following clues:
The book has black & white photos rather than drawings.
The main character is a tween or early teen boy who picks up a package and it might be a birthday present. He has a friend open it and unpacks an electric train. They set it up and start playing with it but somehow, possibly via magic, a new track appears and the train heads off through the neighborhood with the boys following.
After several adventures, they all end up back home. |

Within a matter of a few hours, Rachel at the Brookfield Public Library answered the book stumper with the title and image of "The Runaway Train" by Creighton Peet published in 1943.

"I want to thank the Jefferson library for the fun Memory Cafe. It was fun to watch the old movie/ music clips. My husband is always reluctant to come but when we left he said 'that was really fun.' High praise from someone who no longer finds fun in much. 😊
Thanks again, looking forward to seeing you in the future."
~ Grateful feedback from a patron at Jefferson Public Library about her husband who is in his early 60s, diagnosed with early onset dementia
