Libraries supporting brain health! |
As Wisconsin's population ages, addressing brain health becomes increasingly important. By 2030, nearly 1 in 5 residents will be 65 or older, with a growing number affected by Alzheimer’s, dementia, and memory loss. |
|
|
Our member libraries are stepping up to support patrons now by offering programs and resources that promote cognitive wellness, lifelong learning, and social engagement. Through partnerships and outreach, libraries are helping ensure that patrons have access to the tools and resources they need to maintain their brain health and quality of life.

Brain Health Resources
Patrons have access to collections of books, audiobooks, DVDs, and other media focused on brain health, aging, and cognitive wellness for free. Browse the catalog. |
Memory Cafés
The Library Memory Project, an initiative of Bridges Library System, offers Memory Cafés at 21 libraries throughout the year. A memory café is a social gathering for those who are experiencing early stage dementia, mild memory loss or mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and for their families, friends, or care partners. Find upcoming Memory Café events. |
Programs and Workshops
Libraries invite health professionals, including neurologists, psychologists, and dietitians, to present talks and workshops on brain health and strategies to prevent cognitive decline. They also offer free memory screening sessions in partnership with the Aging & Disability Resource Center (ADRC). Join Better Brain Health Program at Waukesha Public Library. |
Social and Recreational Activities
Many libraries host regular puzzle and game nights, trivia events, and creative activities, all of which are known to support cognitive function by challenging the brain and fostering social interaction. Join Art for Wellness Workshop at New Berlin Public Library. |
Caregiver Support
Collaborations between libraries and Aging & Disability Resource Centers (ADRCs) include programs aimed at supporting caregivers of individuals with dementia or other cognitive impairments. These programs provide valuable information, resources, and emotional support to those caring for loved ones. Join Powerful Tools for Caregivers at Johnson Creek Public Library. |

Try before you buy!
| "This library is a game changer for me - at 80 years of age, I'm developing health issues. I search online to find relevant books on the topic, then search in my "Cafe" [the online catalog] for those books and check them out. It's a great way for me to review the books and decide whether they provide the best information for me (on my limited budget) before I buy them for myself! Thank you, dear Library!!"
