A sepia photo of a store with canned goods lining the back walls

Bronson-Folsom Store?

This photograph was recently donated to the library by a local family. It captures a quiet moment inside a Stillwater store on what the wall calendars indicate is November 18, 1925. A woman and a man stand behind an L-shaped counter, surrounded by shelves stocked for customers preparing for the season.

A handwritten note on the back of the photograph states this is the Bronson-Folsom store, the long-running grocery and general mercantile business shaped by David Bronson, one of Stillwater’s most influential early leaders. Bronson helped build the town’s lumber era prosperity, served as its first Fire Chief and a two-term mayor, and guided civic life for decades.

We're hoping the community can help confirm this piece of Stillwater history.

  • Do you recognize this store layout?

  • Can you verify whether this is the Bronson-Folsom store on Main Street?

  • Do you know the names of the woman and man behind the counter?

Your knowledge and family stories help bring Stillwater’s past into clearer focus. Let us know what you remember!

Another Shade of Winter

Another Shade of Winter is an upcoming gallery exhibit by Minnesota-based abstract painter Jackson Duin, on view at the library in January and February. Known for his richly textural style and emotionally driven approach to abstraction, Duin creates work that invites viewers to experience winter not as a landscape, but as a feeling—layered, reflective, and personal. Despite his young age, Duin has already developed a significant body of work and made history as the youngest artist to curate an exhibition at ArtReach St. Croix.

As Duin explains, “I began making art when I was very young and my natural inclination has always been to paint how things feel rather than how they look.” His paintings aim to translate internal emotion into color, texture, and movement, encouraging viewers to connect with the same sensations he experiences while creating.

Meet the artist at a public reception on Thursday, January 15, at 6:30 PM, in the Stillwater Public Library gallery. Gallery exhibits are viewable during library hours.
