Poem for a New Year
by Matt Goodfellow

Something’s moving in,
I hear the weather in the wind,
sense the tension of a sheep-field
and the pilgrimage of fins.
Something’s not the same,
I taste the sap and feel the grain,
hear the rolling of the rowan
ringing, singing in a change.
Something’s set to start,
there’s meadow-music in the dark
and the clouds that shroud the mountain
slowly, softly start to part.

A Message from Agawam Public Library

We hope that you had a happy and healthy holiday season, and that you're ready to take on 2023!

During his reign, Julius Cesar instituted January 1st as the first day of each new year as a way to honor the month's namesake: Janus, the Roman god of beginnings. Janus's two faces allowed him to look back to the past and forward to the future, a helpful reminder to focus on balance as we move into the new year.

We'd like to invite you to take a moment to consider the energy and intentions you'd like to bring with you into 2023. What will make you the happiest you can be, and how can you prioritize that in the new year? Whatever it may be, we hope you are able to cultivate it into something that feeds your spirit and brings you joy.

We wish you a safe winter season and a very happy 2023, and we hope to see you in the new year!

Don't Forget...

The Agawam Public Library is proud to host a collection of paintings and photography from artist Thomas Rickis throughout the month of January 2023. A Connecticut-born artist now residing in Western Massachusetts, Rickis considers himself an impressionist landscape painter and a contemporary abstract watercolorist. He paints using collage concepts to transform the two dimensional painting surface into a three dimensional painting surface with a variety of materials. The Agawam Library will display his selection of mixed media art and photography on the gallery walls of the main level of the library until January 31.

A collection of children’s books will also be on display in the glass cases visible between the circulation and children’s sections of the library. One case will hold a selection of late 1800s antique children’s books, part of a personal collection of an Agawam Library staff member. The other case will hold a selection of children’s books identified as favorites by staff of the Agawam Library, with copies provided either by the staff or through local interlibrary loan.

Visitors are welcomed to explore these art and book exhibits throughout January during the regular hours of the library. The Agawam Public Library is open 9 AM – 9 PM Mondays through Thursdays, and 9 AM – 5 PM Fridays and Saturdays. Any questions about the exhibits can be routed to the Information Desk at 413-789-1550 x4.

Agawam Public Library has been chosen for Big Y's Community Bag Program! This January, the library will receive a $1 donation for every $2.50 reusable Community Bag sold at the West Springfield Big Y!
