Larchmont Remembered: New England's Most Horrific Sea Disaster Tuesday January 14th
6:30 - 7:30pm Providence Journal Columnist Daniel Harrington brings to life the horror and heroism of the worst maritime disaster in New England history. Daniel presents eyewitness accounts and never-before-seen photographs of the 1907 sinking of the steamer off of the coast of Rhode Island. This event is free and open to all. Shattered Stars: The Power of Courage, Compassion, and Kindness An Author Talk with Irene Stern Frielich Wednesday January 29th 6:30pm In this multimedia presentation, Irene retraces the Stern-Herzfeld family’s footsteps as they escape their comfortable home in Germany on Kristallnacht in 1938 and cross the border to the Netherlands. The family lives there in relative safety until the Nazis invade and turn their world upside down. Using photos, interviews, audio and video recordings, Irene brings to life the period from 1938 through liberation in 1945. She introduces the people and places portrayed in her memoir, including a baker, a coffee roaster, farmers, clergy, and officials, many of whom demonstrated courage, compassion, and kindness to help her family survive. And she describes unexpected encounters with descendants of people who knew her family so many decades ago. This program is free and open to all. Registration recommended for courtesy email reminder. Spice Club: Soup and Bread (for ages 13+)
Wed. January 15th A different spice is featured each month.This month, we're celebrating National Soup Month!
Each kit contains information about the spice, 2 recipes, and enough of the spice to make both recipes. The Spice Club is open to ages 13 and up. One registration per family. Limited to 20 families.
Once registered, come to the library on Wednesday, January 15th, to pick up the kit. Adults ages 18+ are welcome to attend our Connective Coloring Club where they can meet others and engage in conversation, connection and contemplation. Horror & Sci Fi Discussion Group (ages 18+) Tuesday January 28th 6:30 - 7:30pm Do you love to read horror books and/or watch horror movies? How about science fiction books and/or and movies? If you answered yes to these questions, then have we got the book/movie discussion group for you! All horror and sci fi aficionados ages 18 and up are welcome to join in the discussion! Every other month we will focus on one title, read the book, watch the film (on our own) and then discuss the book and how the film measures up. Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House is our JANUARY title. Copies of the book are available at the library. You can access the film by requesting the dvd through the library or by streaming it (with your library card) on Kanopy. It is recommended that you have read the book and watched the film at the time of the discussion.
