The 2025 Community Reads Author Presentation is THIS MONTH on Monday, November 10 at 7:00pm!
The Neighborhood Library Association's
15th annual Community Reads selection:
"My Murder" by Katie Williams

Synopsis:
Lou is a happily married mother of an adorable toddler. She's also the victim of a local serial killer. Recently brought back to life and returned to her grieving family by a government project, she is grateful for this second chance. But as the new Lou re-adapts to her old routines, and as she bonds with other female victims, she realizes that disturbing questions remain about what exactly preceded her death and how much she can really trust those around her.

Now it's not enough to care for her child, love her husband, and work the job she's always enjoyed--she must also figure out the circumstances of her death. Darkly comic, tautly paced, and full of surprises, My Murder is a devour-in-one-sitting, clever twist on the classic thriller.

The Genealogy Do-Over: A Year of Learning From My Mistakes
Tuesday, November 18, 7:00-8:30pm on Zoom

It isn’t often that we get a “do-over” when it comes to stuff that matters in life. When you first got started researching your family history, did you do some things that now are just plain “embarrassing” such as name collecting, not citing sources and more? Well, now there’s hope since genealogists from beginner to advanced are employing new research methodologies and documentation practices!

Follow genealogist Thomas MacEntee as he starts his genealogy research from scratch, but includes sound research practices and methodologies as well as new templates, tools, and the latest technology for better family history research.

New Library Updates
MILFORD ROAD CLOSURE

On Wednesday, October 1, Milford Road between 11 Mile Road and Locust Street in Lyon Township closed for driveway and utility construction under the road, and a center left turn lane extension north to Elk Run for the new Lyon Township Public Library. The closure is expected until November 11 (6 week project in total, and weather dependent).

We truly understand road closures can be frustrating, as they impact us all. We assure you that this is a necessary part of our project for the new library, and is being done for the safety of the community. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out.

Shared by Road Commission for Oakland County.

Latest Construction Updates:

On the New Shelf and Waiting to be Read
Dinner at the Night Library by Hika Harada
Dinner at the Night Library
by Hika Harada

All Otaha Higuchi wants to do is work with books. However, the exhausting nature of her work at a chain bookstore, combined with her paltry salary and irritating manager quickly bring reality crashing down around her. She is on the verge of quitting when she receives a message from somebody anonymous, inviting her to apply for a job at '"The Night Library." The hours are from seven o'clock to midnight. The library exclusively stores books by deceased authors, and none of them can be checked out - instead, they're put on public display to be revered and celebrated by the library's visitors, making it akin to a book museum.

There, Otoha meets the other staff, a group of likeminded literary misfits, including a legendary chef who prepares incredible meals for the library's employees at the end of each day. Night after night, she bonds with her colleagues over meals in the café, each of which are inspired by the literature on the shelves.

But as strange occurrences start happening around the library that may bring the threat of its closure, Otaha and her friends fear that the peace they have found there will forever be lost to them. Will their faith in the value of books strong enough to save it? And what will remain if it isn't?
Saltcrop by Yume Kitasei
Saltcrop
by Yume Kitasei

In Earth's not too distant future, seas consume coastal cities, highways disintegrate underwater, and mutant fish lurk in pirate-controlled depths. Skipper, a skilled sailor and the youngest of three sisters, earns money skimming and reselling plastic from the ocean to care for her ailing grandmother. But then her eldest sister, Nora, goes missing. Nora left home a decade ago in pursuit of a cure for failing crops all over the world. When Skipper and her other sister, Carmen, receive a cryptic plea for help, they must put aside their differences and set out across the sea to find--and save--her.
As they voyage through a dying world both beautiful and strange, encountering other travelers along the way, they learn more about their sister's work and the corporations that want what she discovered.
But the farther they go, the more uncertain their mission becomes: What dangerous attention did Nora attract, and how well do they really know their sister--or each other? Thus begins an epic journey spanning oceans and continents and a wistful rumination on sisterhood, friendship, and ecological disaster.
Outer space is closer than Antarctica : and other things I learned while falling in love at the bottom of the world by Michelle Ott
Outer Space is Closer Than Antarctica
by Michelle Ott

In 2004, feeling burned out and dissatisfied, Michelle Ott left her high-profile gallery job in New York to work as a janitor at McMurdo Station in Antarctica: the coldest, windiest, driest place on Earth. There, she fell in love--not only with her future partner, but with the raw, inhospitable, incomparable beauty of the continent itself. She took trips to nowhere on the Antarctic ice and mapped out the most romantic date locations on a remote research base where the sun never sets.
She witnessed the bright green aurora australis at -30 F, cried in response to its beauty, and found her eyes frozen shut by her tears.
She learned about (literally) breathtaking katabatic winds, ventifacts, and what it was like to bake cookies for 1000. She dropped a piece of glacier ice into a glass of booze and consumed the ancient air bubbles that were trapped within it.
In this emotional blend of art, science, and deeply personal stories, Ott shares the wisdom and wonder gleaned from her four trips to the southernmost continent. Complete with hand-drawn maps and diagrams, accessible scientific explanations, and the realizations that can only come from turning your life upside down, Outer Space Is Closer Than Antarctica is an ode to explorers and dreamers, scientists and artists, and anyone curious enough to brave the unknown.
