2025 Summer Reading Challenge
There is still time to join the Summer Reading Challenge if you haven't already! Once you sign-up you can back-log any minutes you spent reading since June 1 so you can gain points towards the reading champion goal of 1,000 points! More ways to earn points are to attend library events, complete fun Challenge Missions (like reading out loud to a pet or exploring one of our online resources) or play games on the READsquared app! All ages can participate.

Starting July 1 you can now claim your Summer Reading Prizes!
  • Claim prizes by logging in to READsquared, finding the prize store, browsing the prizes, and "buying" a prize of your choosing for 250 points!
  • Prizes ordered by Wednesday evening will be available for pick up inside the library that Friday morning. Each patron may claim up to 8 prizes during the summer.
The last day to log minutes will be on Friday, August 15.

Gorillas On The Line Campaign
The Lyon Township Public Library is partnering with the Detroit Zoological Society (DZS), who is in partnership with Saving Animals from Extinction (SAFE) Gorilla, to participate in the "Gorillas On The Line" global cell phone recycling challenge.

For the last 6 years, the Detroit Zoo has collected nearly 8,000 electronic devices and donated over $4,500.00 towards gorilla conservation through the Gorillas on the Line initiative. In North America, the Gorillas on the Line program has collected nearly 95,000 devices and donated over $48,000.00 towards gorilla conservation. The Detroit Zoo is ranked 3rd overall in devices collected in all of North America, and currently holds the title of Silverback award winner for being the top collector (2,792 devices in 2024).

So, what does this mean?
  • LTPL will have labeled boxes in our curbside vestibule to collect old, small electronic donations from Wednesday, July 2 until Monday, September 1st.
  • Items accepted: cell phones, smart phones, tablets, apple/android watches, GPS, mp3 players, e-readers, digital cameras, handheld gaming systems, headphones, and all accessories.
  • Items NOT accepted: laptops, computers, monitors, printers, and batteries.
  • The collected items will be recycled through ECO-CELL. Reusable devices will be refurbished and resold to raise money for Gorilla SAFE conservation initiatives in Africa, while unusable devices will be recycled through certified companies.

"With Love" Digital Pen Pals
We have a special new offering at Lyon Township Public Library! "With Love" is now available to all our patrons, completely free of charge.

What is With Love?
"With Love" is a living animated show where you express yourself through creative writing with a cast of characters. Set in the whimsical world of Notification Central, you'll join GoodGood (your caffeine-loving mailman friend) and his pals on their mission to keep digital connections real in a world going robotic. Every letter you write shapes the story! Unlike typical screen time, With Love encourages authentic communication and creativity. As you exchange letters with your animated pen pals, you'll develop writing skills naturally while building relationships with characters who remember your conversations and respond thoughtfully.

With Love can be used on a desktop, or download the app on Apple devices.

"With Love" is available now, and is free for all patrons! Visit https://www.withlove.org/library/ltpl today to get started! Click “Join Now” button, create your account, and begin your letter-writing adventure! Try the "With Love" mission this summer to earn points towards your summer reading challenge goal!

New Library Updates
The construction team is hard at work at
the new library site!
  • Brick work is almost complete.
  • Underground plumbing and electrical are being installed right now. When that is complete, they will rough grade the site (indoor and outdoor), so they can pour the foundation.
  • Once the roof is complete, they will be able to begin work inside.
We will continue to share updates as we receive them. Make sure to follow us on all our social medias (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X) where we will share pictures and any important updates.

Visit the Reimagine Your Library page on our website to stay up to date with the latest information as planning progresses.

July is Disability Pride Month!
Sitting Pretty : The View From My Ordinary Resilient Disabled Body
by Rebekah Taussig

Growing up as a paralyzed girl during the 90s and early 2000s, Rebekah Taussig only saw disability depicted as something monstrous (The Hunchback of Notre Dame), inspirational (Helen Keller), or angelic (Forrest Gump). None of this felt right; and as she got older, she longed for more stories that allowed disability to be complex and ordinary, uncomfortable and fine, painful and fulfilling. Writing about the rhythms and textures of what it means to live in a body that doesn't fit, Rebekah reflects on everything from the complications of kindness and charity, living both independently and dependently, experiencing intimacy, and how the pervasiveness of ableism in our everyday media directly translates to everyday life.
I'll Look So Hot In A Coffin : And Other Thoughts I Used to Have About My Body
by Carla Sosenko

Carla Sosenko was born with Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome, a rare vascular disorder that resulted in legs of different sizes, a mass of flesh on her back, a hunched posture, and other idiosyncrasies big and small. She spent years trying to hide under layers of clothing, and then experimented with the opposite: wearing tiny dresses and short shorts, daring people to stare so she could make them regret it. No matter what she did, she was worried that she didn't measure up. In this candid and funny memoir, Carla shares what existing in an unconventional body has meant for her self-image, mental health, relationships, and ambitions. Carla explores the ways in which she's felt alone and without community: not disabled but different; the recipient of pretty privilege, but also fatphobia; too much, but still never enough. We follow along as she learns to claim her body-and mind and spirit and life-for exactly what they are: her own. A clarion call for anyone who has ever felt like an outsider or believed they should take up less space, I'll Look So Hot In a Coffin offers hope, recognition, and a new way to see ourselves-by celebrating what sets us apart.
The Boys of Riverside : A Deaf Football Team and A Quest For Glory
by Thomas Fuller

Revealing a portrait of high school athletics, and deafness in America, this extraordinary true story of an all-deaf high school football team's triumphant climb from underdog to undefeated looks back at their 2021 and 2022 season during which they chased history. Illustrations.
