Young Woman Hiding Her Face Behind A Red Book And Smiling

Library Whispers

Ancient Prophecy! Long has it been claimed that Athena and Poseidon, the griffins standing guard at OPL, once kept watch over Chicago’s infamous Everleigh Club. It’s a juicy story, but our fact-checkers have uncovered the truth.

Sources reveal that the griffins were actually created for the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia before eventually making their way to Oconomowoc. After spending years at Briar Cottage and later Draper Hall, they were rescued at auction in 1967 when community members rallied to keep them in town.

Of course, the griffins have inspired a few legends of their own over the years. One particularly dubious tale speaks of a little-known griffin prophecy:

“When the Guardians of Books stand watch over Oconomowoc, stories shall flourish and readers shall prosper. But should either guardian be fed, it will immediately consume three James Patterson novels before anyone notices.”

Given the size of the Patterson collection, experts agree it could be years before such loss would be detected.
Fortunately, Poseidon and Athena appear content with guarding the Library’s treasures rather than snacking on them. Even so, staff continue to recommend that visitors admire the guardians from a respectful distance and refrain from feeding the griffins.

The Library’s collection development policy does not currently account for griffin-related losses.

Researchers continue to debate the prophecy’s authenticity. The griffins have declined to comment.
