Important Library Update, June 5, 2024
A Message from the Library Director
Chip Schrader
Due to transition processes at the state level, a pause in Interlibrary Loans, or borrowing materials from other libraries, is in effect. We are hopeful it will only be a couple of weeks. At worst, it will be a short period beyond that. The transition in services will likely be smoother than the worst-case scenario. You may still request a book that we own at the Scarborough Library and that requesting process is the same as before. If you have a hold for an item elsewhere, it will be on pause, and you will keep your place in the line.

The best part of the scenario is that your card is still accepted at Walker Memorial Library in Westbrook, Thomas Memorial in Cape Elizabeth, South Portland Public Library, Baxter Memorial Library in Gorham and Libby Memorial Library in Old Orchard. All Cumberland and York County residents are also eligible to get a Portland Public Library card, as well, just bring your driver’s license with a current address to their location and sign up. A list of all reciprocal library partners in Maine can be found here: Libraries Participating in Maine Reciprocal Lending Program: Maine State Library

So, if we don’t have a book on hand that you need, you may bring your library card to these locations and borrow it, then return it directly to them. You can use our same online search at each of their locations for your book, or we can look for you. The only catch is to make sure that your card is in good standing, no overdue books or bills, and make sure that your card hasn’t expired. You may contact us or drop by if you are unsure. It is important to note that we will not be able to return those books for you, a second trip will be required.

We are as anxious as you are about this setback, but this is absolutely temporary, and we will explore creative ways to work around this. As always, we are thankful for each of you in our community. Check out our newsletter and website to preview the richness of our summer programming!
