Peterborough Community Seed Library

Mission

The Peterborough Community Seed Library works to strengthen regional food security and self-reliance by providing free seed to the community, promoting seed saving, and offering ongoing seed saving education.

This initiative is supported by a steering committee, funded by the Friends of the Library, and is sponsored by the Peterborough Town Library.

Goals:

  • Provide heirloom / open-pollinated seeds for community use

  • Promote seed-saving skills through discussions, activities, social media, and educational programming

How to Access Seeds:

All are welcome to select up to 6 packets of seeds per season from this library. You do not need a library card to take seeds.

Why?

The Monadnock area experienced unprecedented supply chain disruptions from 2020-2023, including access to heirloom / open-pollinated (not hybrid) seeds. As a result, conversations about seed saving to protect our community from unexpected seed unavailability began. The Peterborough Community Seed Library hopes to restore and build a local seed saving culture of self-reliance and sharing.

Why does this matter?

Did you know that NH is one of the least food secure states in the U.S.?

Here are a few other reasons:

  • Saving seeds guarantees you will have access to the same seeds next season. Periodic seed shortages occur. This reminds us that seed availability is not guaranteed, and we need local systems to add a layer of security.

  • Saving seeds saves you money and allows you to share this precious resource generously.

  • Saved seeds frequently introduces gardeners to varieties not available in grocery stores, which helps to preserve the flavor profiles of unique varieties.

  • Teaching others to save seeds and sharing gardening knowledge strengthens our community and regional food security.
