 FORGOTTEN FOUNDERS SERIES
John Hancock is Final Subject
in America 250 Lecture Series

Most people recognize the name John Hancock for one reason: his bold, oversized signature on Declaration of Independence.

In fact, his name became synonymous with the very act of signing. But Hancock’s contributions to the cause of American independence extended far beyond that famous flourish.

For that reason, local history enthusiast Sidney Zufall chose Hancock as his sixth and final “Forgotten Founders” lecture series subject and will deliver “John Hancock: Signature of Liberty” at 6 p.m. on Monday, June 15.

A GLIMPSE OF THE PAST
The Alliance Opera House stood at the northeast corner of Main Street and Seneca Avenue and was built in 1867-68 at a cost of $75,000. The first floor contained many stores and offices and the theater was on the third floor. Creaking sounds caused it to be inspected by J.T. Weybrecht the morning of June 2, 1886 and he warned all inhabitants to vacate the premises. At approximately 4:30 p.m., the building collapsed. No one was hurt. The cause was from defective bricks used for its construction. There was some speculation that vibrations from closely passing railroad trains contributed to the shifting of the bricks. This photo, taken approximately 15 minutes after the collapse, is one of thousands of materials can be found at alliancememory.org, a collaboration between Rodman Public Library and the Alliance Historical Society, which is a partner of the Alliance Area Preservation Society and Castle Crusaders, two other historic resources in the Carnation City. Collectively, they are known as the 3 Families. Alliance Memory offers a view of history through photographs, personal recollections, and documents. To access RPL's local history and genealogy resources, visit rodmanlibrary.com/genealogy, or call 330-821-2665, ext. 217.
