SUMMER READING 2025
June 16th - August 31st
 
Starting June 16th, the library will celebrate summer reading with several events and programs! Summer reading is open to Heggan cardholders. 
 
Adults
Pick up an activity log from the reference desk and fill it out by August 31st to be entered into our raffle. 
Prizes are a $50 gift card to Barnes & Noble or tickets to Cats at the Broadway Theatre of Pitman on
October 26 at 7pm! Visit the reference desk for details. 
 
Teens
Complete summer reading tasks like attending programs, listening to audiobooks, and reading books for chances to win prizes. Stop by the children’s desk to pick up your Bookopoly board to get started.
 
Children 
Upon completing their first reading log, children 4 and older will receive a ball chain necklace and a handful of beads to start their necklaces. Upon completing their first reading log, children 3 and under will receive an ice cream coupon. Get started at the children's library!

MUSEUM SPOTLIGHT
Hands-On House Children's Museum of Lancaster
 
Did you know the library has 35 museum and garden passes available for Heggan cardholders? Are you
looking for something to do this summer? Consider borrowing a pass.
 
 The pass for the Hands-On Children's Museum admits 2 adults and up to 3 children. Additional guests are half-price.
 
Museum and garden passes may be borrowed by adult Heggan cardholders in good standing.  Holds may not be placed on museum or garden passes as they are first come, first serve. Museum and garden passes can be checked out for a period of five days at a time and may not be renewed.  If you have any further questions, please call the circulation department at (856) 589-3334 extension 200 or visit the library during our open hours.

MEET A LOCAL AUTHOR
Gene Abel: Bestselling author of Are They Out There?

Join bestselling local author Gene Abel for a discussion of his new book Are They Out There?: Diving for Answers In a Sea of Cover-Ups.

This program is open to all adults.
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY 
 
June 7th at 10am
 
The Friends will celebrate their 20th anniversary with a Butterfly release, remarks from Mayor DellaPia, cupcakes, free sunglasses for kids (made possible by a grant from 4imprint ® one by one® ), free pens, and time capsule dedication. Children’s art and writing contest winners will be announced and the hallway gallery will showcase the children’s work.

The Rambling Readers: A Walking Book Group

Attention all book lovers! Meet Librarian Jenn at Washington Lake Park for a leisurely stroll through the park, while we discuss our latest read. There is no specific book assigned to read. Discuss your favorite, or least favorite, book. Make suggestions to others on books they may enjoy. Learn from others new books to add to your reading list. This group is for anyone who enjoys reading, regardless of who or what you like to read. All this, while getting your steps in for the day. We will cover approximately 1-1.5 miles. Please wear comfortable clothes/footwear. We will meet in Lot A. This program is open to all adults. Advance registration is required. Please provide a contact number, in case we have to cancel the program due to inclement weather.

Mahjong for Beginners

Join us in the adult meeting room to learn to play the popular, fun game of Mahjong! If you have always wanted to learn, but didn't know where to start, this is the place for you to start. This is "American Mahjong." Mahjong is similar to poker but using colorful tiles rather than cards. Instructor Nancy will introduce you to the game basics. You can learn at your own pace with other players who like playing games, learning new things and socializing. Mahjong also gives your mind and memory a healthy workout. Laughter is always a part of playing Mahjong, so have fun!
Microsoft Word: Learn to Create and Edit Resumes

Learn how to create and edit resumes using Microsoft Word. This is a self-paced course using DigitalLearn.org by the Public Library Association. A librarian will be available to assist with any questions. This program is open to all adults. Anyone attending should be comfortable with using a mouse and keyboard. The program will be held in our computer lab.

Get Started With Libby: The Library Reading App

Have you tried the Libby app yet? Whether you were an Overdrive app user with questions about Libby or you are interested in borrowing ebooks and audiobooks from our library for the very first time, join us for our Getting Started with Libby training session. This program is for Margaret E Heggan cardholders. Space is limited, so advance registration is required. Please bring the device you plan on using Libby with. This program will be held in our adults meeting room.
Color Our World: Adult Hand Lettering Class

Join us for a one-hour beginner handlettering workshop where you'll unlock the beauty of creative lettering! Led by South Jersey artist Amanda Chandler, this class will teach you the essential strokes and basic letter forms to get started on your handlettering journey. You’ll practice and refine your skills while crafting a custom lettering piece to take home. Throughout the session, you’ll receive practice sheets and learn techniques that you can easily incorporate into your everyday life. Handlettering is an art that anyone can master, and with Amanda's guidance, you'll soon see your own unique style emerge.
AARP Digital Coupon Tools

If you like saving money on groceries and everyday items, then this lecture is for you! We'll introduce you to the world of digital couponing and a variety of tools to help you get started. You'll learn about coupon websites, apps, and databases as well as tips for getting the best deals. This program is presented by AARP. This program will be held in our adult meeting room. Advance registration is required. This program is open to all adults.
Zine Studio

Join us to create zines and connect with local artists! Blank zines, as well as collaging and drawing materials will be provided, but feel free to bring your own supplies too. Printing and copy services available for your zine creations. Come and create zines in a collaborative, low-stress environment.
TEEN PROGRAMS
Teen Art Club
Monday, June 2, 4:00pm
 
Explore your interest in art with friends. Participants will have time, space, and materials to create. This monthly club will be led by a Teen Advisory Board member and is meant to allow teens to explore all things ART! Come check it out and have fun while exploring favorite artistic mediums and hanging out with like-minded friends. Meetings include discussions, art challenges, time for participants to work on individual projects, collaborations with fellow members, or simply hanging out while incubating one’s creative genius. Come join us to create and have a supportive sounding board for your creativity. The Art Club is open to Teens and Tween in grades 6-12.

Would you like to learn more about the cultures that make up Washington Township? Would you like to learn more about your own? Come join the Teen & Tween Heritage Club! Each month we'll explore our different cultures. Teen leaders will determine the focus culture and the activities we'll explore. Activities can include: making crafts/items that are representative of a culture, foods specific to a culture, spending time online of one of our ancestry programs, and/or possibly learning some key words in the language of the culture. The topics are up to the teen presenter.

Interested in lively teen and tween book discussions? Come join us to chat! Chapter Chat is a Heggan YA focused book club. This group is led by Teen Advisory Board members. This book club meets monthly to discuss popular authors and works of YA fiction. Participants generally select a theme for the books and authors to be discussed each month. A Colorful Carnival: Summer Reading Kick Off Event
