"The Colors of Fall"
by the Kansas Academy of Oil Painters

Kansas Academy of Oil Painters (KAOP) began in 1985 at the urging of the Wichita Center for the Arts, formerly the Wichita Art Association, now Mark Art, which had been sponsoring an annual small oil painting show for several years.  The annual show at the center was a national competition of oil paintings varying in size from 5 x 7 inches to 16 x 20 inches.  Kansas artists were encouraged to found an organization to further stimulate an interest in oil painting for both the artist and the viewer/collector.

As KAOP has evolved, the principal goal has been to encourage each other to achieve excellence in painting through Member interaction, sharing of information, and painting demonstrations.  Anyone wishing to join us in celebrating this beautiful age-old medium is encouraged to apply for membership.

This artistic group of 44 members brings to Derby "The Colors of Fall," a time when the leaves change colors and cozy evenings are spent indoors, warm drinks and comfort food. It's also a time for returning to school, Halloween, Thanksgiving and other fun fall activities.

We hope you will join us celebrating KAOP's talents at a free artist reception during October's Third Thursday, October 19 from 6 to 7:30 pm at the Derby Public Library.

"A Sister's Request"
by Saadia Schroeder
Saadia Schroeder is a Derby artist whose love for art began in middle school and high school. In 10th grade her teacher had the class paint still life and she just didn't connect with that style of art, so she quit painting. Her older sister, Veronica, mentioned her friends were taking a Bob Ross class at the DRC, so she took that class in 2019. And so began Saadia's love of painting.

Saddia's art works will be available to view and purchase through November 26. Perhaps you will discover an original work of art for a special someone?  A Sister's Request will be part of October 19th's Third Thursday event in the City of Derby.  We hope you will stop in and enjoy her acrylic and oil paintings.

On display through November 26, 2023

Looking for someplace to discuss books? We've got you covered!

We have four active book groups here at the library that are open to everyone. If you love to read and talk about the books you read, pop in to one or more of the book groups!

Bemused Bibliophiles — meets at 1 p.m. October 4. The title for October is Saturday Night at the Lakeside Supper Club by J. Ryan Stradal. The book club will meet in person in the Frank Fanning Conference Room.

Hauntingly Good Reads — meets at 7 p.m. October 3. The title for October is The Woman in Black by Susan Hill. The book club will meet in person in the Frank Fanning Conference Room.

Joyful Page Turners — meets at 6:45 p.m. October 26. The title for October is The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner. The book club will meet in person in the Frank Fanning Room.

Bemused Bibliophiles meets during the day and reads popular books that have been on the bestseller list. Hauntingly Good Reads meets in the evening and explores all kinds of books that have a supernatural/magical/unexplainable kind of bent—we look far beyond the traditional vampires, ghosts and witches. Wine & YA is our newest book club centered around young adult novels and adults who love to read them. Joyful Page Turners is the most enduring book club at the library—it's been meeting regularly since May 2000! Books selected for this book club include just about everything: classics, modern bestsellers, non-fiction, and more.

Click the blue "Read More" button below to visit the book club page on the library website, where you can find lists of books each book club has read.
