"A Brush with Whimsy : Bold Colors & Playful Trees"
by Virgil Penner

Virgil Penner's paintings are renowned for their vibrant colors and otherworldly landscapes, often featuring creative trees that defy reality. Inspired by his high school art teacher's words to "never use straight lines or dull colors," Penner creates works that promise to transport you into a world of whimsy.

"My paintings are all done from memory," says Penner. "I don't paint from photos or on location. The colors come to me, and the lines just bend where they want to."

Since retiring, Virgil Penner has produced hundreds of paintings, selling them through galleries, art festivals, and his website (virgilapennerart.com). Notably, in just the past 15 years, he has created and sold over 700 paintings, a testament to his passion and prolificacy after a 45-year hiatus from art.

Join us on Thursday, August 15th from 6:00 to 7:00 pm as we celebrate the captivating works of artist Virgil Penner. This Third Thursday event is your chance to be mesmerized by Penner's unique artistic style. Artist Virgil Penner will be present at the reception to discuss his work and answer your questions. He enjoys interacting with guests and sharing his artistic experiences.

"Formed from Fire and Water"
by Natalie Brown

The Derby Arts Council at the Derby Public Library is pleased to announce the exhibition of “Formed from Fire and Water," a collection of ceramic works and paintings by Derby High School visual arts teacher Natalie Brown. The show will be on display in the lobby display case throughout the month of July.

Brown's exhibition delves into the transformative power of fire and water on clay, a material born from the earth. The collection features a captivating interplay between these elements, showcased through a series of wheel-thrown forms.

Many of the pieces boast soft, organic curves that highlight the surface decoration. Half the collection features forms altered while still malleable, creating subtle distortions that are then accentuated by flowing lines reminiscent of water. Celadon glazes further enhance this aquatic theme, creating a sense of serenity on the finished pieces. The remaining works utilize a similar form but are left unadorned, showcasing the natural beauty of the clay. As these pieces dry, Brown employs a gentle burnishing technique, resulting in a deep, polished surface.

Brown also utilizes a unique technique called saggar firing. Combustibles, metal oxides, and other materials are wrapped around the pots, transferring vibrant colors onto the clay during the firing process. This technique reflects the dramatic impact of heat and flame, adding another layer of visual intrigue.

Natalie Brown is a passionate artist and educator with a deep connection to clay. Born and raised in Topeka, Kansas, her artistic journey began in college. After discovering the transformative power of clay, she switched her major from biology to art, ultimately earning a BFA from Kansas State University and an MFA from Wichita State University.

Following a stint at City Arts, Brown transitioned into public education, receiving her teaching license and embarking on a rewarding teaching career. Since 2005, she has overseen the ceramics and sculpture program at Derby High School. Her dedication extends beyond the classroom walls, as she sponsors the local chapter of the National Art Honor Society, serves as an Adjunct Professor of Art Methods at Friends University, and holds the esteemed position of President of the Kansas Art Education Association. Brown actively exhibits her work in both group and solo shows, primarily focusing on carved porcelain featuring abstractions from nature.

ALL THINGS BOOKS

One Perfect Couple by Ruth Ware

First line: He is fighting.

Summary: Lyla and Nico are heading for a small island in the Indian Ocean. Having been picked for a new reality TV show, One Perfect Couple, they are competing against four other couples in challenges created to test their relationships. Nico is hoping to jumpstart his acting career and Lyla is along to support Nico but after the first test everyone is frustrated with the game and each other. But overnight a storm hits the island leaving the contestants stranded on a deserted island. Without their phones, electricity and supplies quickly dwindling the stranded partners see that this is now a game of life and death.

My Thoughts: With Ruth Ware I have a complicated reading history. Some of her books are excellent and others are a big letdown. But her newest thriller is filled with intrigue and tense moments that kept me on the edge of my seat. And as with other go-to authors, I did not read the synopsis of the book before starting this and just jumped right in blind. I find that I like this approach because I have few preconceived judgments.

When telling others about this book I likened it to Survivor/Love Island meets Lord of the Flies meets a very dark Gilligan’s Island. Sounds crazy, right?! It was. The characters are all hoping to get something from this reality show. They arrive on a beautiful tropical resort island. It appears perfect and the TV show could be a simple way to get noticed. Then things are turned upside down and everyone’s true colors quickly come out. There is immediate tension and it continues to build as alliances are formed but rather than being voted off the island, you could die instead.

Lyla was a strong and level-headed main character that is just trying to stay alive. It is easy to cheer for her. However, the other characters are a little more complicated. Where do their loyalties lie? Or what are their motives? It kept me guessing how it would end and who would survive.

I would highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for a darker beach read on their summer TBR list.

FYI: Abuse (physical and mental), death, murder and language.

The Assassin of Venice by Alyssa Palombo

First line: Sun beat down on the piazzetta as I scanned the crowd for the man I was going to murder.

Summary: In the beautiful city of Venice, the enchanting courtesan Valentina Riccardi entertains wealthy clients looking for a woman with charm, wit and beauty. But this is not the only thing Valentina excels at. She has become a skilled assassin of the men who would betray the Venetian Republic. Working for a group called the Council of the Ten she uses her special set of skills to get close to her targets until one day the Ten ask her to kill someone very dear to her.

As she looks deeper into the council she starts to wonder if the men she has been targeting were really a threat or if she is being used to kill for their own advancement. Using her friendship with the other courtesans she must unravel the web of the Ten before she is discovered and finds herself the target.

My Thoughts: This was a intriguing story set in such a beautiful but dangerous location. The Venice of sixteenth century was one fraught with intrigue and danger. Palombo does a great job of bringing this world to life. Through Valentina I could feel the fear of being denounced as an enemy of the state. It was a very real consequence of living in Venice at the time.

Valentina is a strong character who uses what she has available to survive in a patriarchal society. She has had to live through horrific events and keep moving forward. I enjoyed seeing her being confident with lots of power.

I would highly recommend Alyssa Palombo's other novels for someone looking for a historical fiction novel with a strong female main character.
