Take Your Child to the Library Day
The 13th Annual Take Your Child to the Library Day is Saturday, February 3, 2024 - though you can also celebrate on any other date in February that your library chooses. Visit www.ctlibrarians.org/page/take for graphics, planning resources, and activity ideas. Participation is completely customizable – it can be as simple as handing out bookmarks, or as elaborate as a full-day extravaganza. Registration is simple and free through this form. When libraries register, they’ll be placed on the national TYCLD map for their community to find.
TYCLD is an international celebration that encourages families everywhere to take their children to their local library. Launched in 2011 in Connecticut by librarians Nadine Lipman (Waterford Public Library, retired) and Caitlin Augusta (Stratford Library) with artist Nancy Elizabeth Wallace, TYCLD raises community awareness about the importance of the library in the life of a child, and promotes library services and programs for children and families.
Since 2011, more than 1,735 libraries have participated, serving 56.54 million people and drawing attention to the importance of the library in the lives of children.
Last year, the TYCLD team launched a new public-facing website: takeyourchildtothelibrary.org. The site features information about Take Your Child to the Library Day and the benefits of libraries for children, including an interactive map for families to find a participating library near them. Coming soon is a librarian resource page with information and tools to make participating even easier.
Libraries can get further information and inspiration from these videos:
Take Your Child to the Library Day is coordinated by the Connecticut Library Consortium and co-founder Caitlin Augusta. |

Each year a committee of the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) identifies the best of the best in children's books. According to the Notables Criteria, "notable" is defined as: Worthy of note or notice, important, distinguished, outstanding. As applied to children's books, notable should be thought to include books of especially commendable quality, books that exhibit venturesome creativity, and books of fiction, information, poetry and pictures for all age levels (birth through age 14) that reflect and encourage children's interests in exemplary ways.
