Youth Services Notes

From the Library of Virginia

We’ve revamped the Youth Services category in Niche Academy! You’ll find several dozen new courses on topics that cover library services specific to the developmental needs of infants, children, and tween & teen patrons. Stop in to explore evaluating picture books, storytime programming, and facilitating conversations about cultural diversity in ways that are suitable for young audiences. Additional courses address developmental sore spots for tween and teen patrons and behavior management for that age group. We hope to see you there. Below are links into the multi-course learning pathways available in the Youth Services category:

  • The Youth Services Basics
  • Access Video: Just for Kids
  • Babies and Toddlers
  • Best Picture Books
  • Children’s Programming Ideas
  • Cultural Literacy in Children's Services
  • Storytime
    • Incorporating activities in storytime
    • Bi-lingual Storytime
  • Transforming Teen Services
    • Behavior and Brain Development

Congratulations to Chesterfield Public Library for their selection to the upcoming cohort of Building Community-Based Summers (BCBS).   Forty-nine libraries applied, and sixteen were selected for the cohort taking place in March and April 2025.

Building Community-Based Summers (BCBS) empowers libraries to build summer services by centering and designing with community.   Building Community-Based Summers’ learning sessions show how to include the voices of all groups in the community when designing and delivering summer library services.   For more information: https://communitybasedsummers.org/
