The Public Library Association (PLA) today published the 2023 Public Library Technology Survey report. The national survey updates emerging trends around technology capacity, resources for patrons, infrastructure, digital literacy, and staffing in U.S. public libraries. This data is vital to understand how libraries serve as hubs of knowledge and innovation in our communities and continue to evolve to meet patron needs.
The report addresses questions such as: How are library professionals advancing digital equity in their communities? What types of technology devices do libraries loan to patrons, and are more or fewer libraries offering these items compared to in 2020? What are the primary challenges libraries face in providing technology resources and services?... |

From attending summer science demonstrations as a kid to volunteering as a high school student, the library has always been an important presence for me.
When I was seven and my dad lost his job, my parents leaned on our community to help raise my sister and me. We got hand-me-downs from friends and food vouchers from our church — and the library became an even more central part of my life.
At least once a week, my dad would take us to the library, where my sister could get help on her homework, I could explore the children’s books, and my dad could look for jobs. As it’s done for so many others, our local library stepped up to take care of us.... |

Voting is one of the greatest privileges and responsibilities of citizenship in the United States. Yet, turnout in national elections is consistently lower than two-thirds of eligible voters. Participation rates among multiple demographic groups and in state or local elections are often lower still. There is frequent talk about the critical role of libraries in our democracy. What does that look like in practice? Libraries are nonpartisan, but they are not indifferent. As institutions that provide access to information, resources, programs, and public spaces for all members of a community, libraries are a cornerstone for civic engagement and more important than ever. The Richmond Public Library and Virginia Poverty Law Center (VPLC) are launching a partnership aimed to help renters that may be facing eviction.
A spokesperson said the program will give guided assistance using VPLC’s new Eviction Defense Center to answer renters’ questions and help them prepare for court.

July 8, 2024 - The UncommonWealth Public Library Spotlight
Roughly 20% of the population is neurodivergent, meaning that over 6,000 individuals in Halifax County, Virginia, have a neurodivergent condition. These children and adults had no space to call their own, tailored to their specific needs. This is where we stepped in and decided to create a room where they could get away, a quiet space that was just for them.
The number one question our staff at the South Boston Public Library have been asked since February 2024 is, “What is a sensory room?” The answer tends to lead to a lengthy discussion of what people with autism, ADHD, and other neurodivergent conditions need to cope with in the everyday world. A sensory room is a safe place, typically with low lighting, soft seats, and a plethora of sensory items to use and play with. But why is such a safe space needed?... |
