Kids to Parks Day - May 17
Kids to Parks Day is a national day of outdoor play celebrated annually on the third Saturday of May. The day connects kids and families with their local, state, and national parks, public lands, and waters.
Virginia State Parks have special events planned to celebrate this day of outdoor play. The programs include walks and hikes, arts and crafts, learning about wildlife and the natural world, and outdoor activities like fishing, paddling, and archery. Programs vary by park so check out what each park is offering. |

Children’s Book Week May 5-11
Children’s Book Week, established in 1919, is a celebration of books and the connection they bring. The 2025 slogan is An Ocean of Stories. Join us in celebrating the vast, collective ocean populated by the stories we read, share, and tell.
As an annual tradition of Children’s Book Week, esteemed children’s book illustrators are chosen to create bookmarks and other activities that celebrate kid lit and reading. Artists from all over the country have contributed their beautiful and inspiring artwork embracing the theme, An Ocean of Stories.

The 2025 ALSC Summer Reading lists are packed with a wide array of engaging books and selected digital resources for children from birth through grade 8. The lists are compiled and annotated by members of ALSC’s Quicklists Consulting Committee.
These colorful lists are available for free download from the ALSC website to share with children and families and to assist with readers' advisory. |
