Solar Eclipse 2024
On Monday, April 8, 2024, there will be a total solar eclipse that will cross North America. While Virginia is not in the path of totality, we will see anywhere from 75% to 90% or more depending on where you are in the state. You can check out this map here to see the degree you should expect to see in your neck of the woods and the time of max eclipse. Here are some more resources for the event:

How Can Gale in Context Elementary Help You with Public Library Programming?
Gale in Context is not just for school librarians! It provides programming activities along with research suggestions specifically for use by public libraries. Gale in Context supports elementary-age kids with trusted videos, magazine and news articles, images, and books on topics in science, social studies, language arts, and more.
One example is their solar system trading cards.
These printable cards include space to fill out answers to: The planet’s order in the solar system
More facts the child has uncovered through reading or research
Space for where they learned these facts. This provides early practice of library research skills!
And they go a step further with solar system trading card activities. This is a PDF sheet of ideas for in-library programming and take-home activities. Ideas for working with the trading cards include:
Print and display double-sided copies of the Gale In Context: Elementary Solar System Trading Cards alongside your reading materials for children.
Cut the individual cards and distribute one card each time a child fulfills a library task. You may even award small prizes to kids who collect and complete a full set.
Ask kids to sign and turn in their work for an in-library display, or have parents take photos of completed cards and tag the library on social media. |

| CLSP Theme and Slogan Listening Sessions
All CSLP member library staff are invited to contribute thoughts about future summer themes and slogans. This April, you will have two virtual opportunities to give feedback on a slogan for 2027’s theme (Mystery/Detective/Suspense) and a theme for 2028. What type of sleuthing will 2027 bring to our libraries? Will we spend summer of 2028 getting our hands dirty in the garden? Standing under a tree during a rainstorm? Zipping into the future? You get to help us decide!
Register for one of our two listening sessions in April by clicking on the links below. We want to hear your voice! Ahead of the meeting, we will be providing the top 25 options for 2027 slogans and 2028 themes. Help us narrow it down to the ten that will be voted on by State Reps at the annual CSLP meeting!
Slogan/Theme Listening Session Option #1: Thursday, April 18th: 1:00 p.m. PDT/2:00 p.m. MDT/3:00 p.m. CDT/4:00 p.m. EDT Register Here
