What comes to mind when I think of April?
The old phrase, April showers bring May flowers. (What do Mayflowers bring? - Pilgrims!)
April Morning, a book I read when I was young, about a young man and his experience in the Battles of Lexington and Concord, which took place 250 years ago this April 19th. Patriots’ Day is the holiday that commemorates those battles, and in observance of it, we will be closed on Monday, April 21st.
The old adage, (often credited to our founding father Benjamin Franklin, but originating earlier) “in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”
We have tax forms. Get them while supplies last! We also have the Alfred Hitchcock thriller Psycho with its iconic shower murder scene done with shadows and accompanying high pitched strains of string instruments. We will have music programs at the Shute Library during school vacation week, April 22nd-25th.
We’ll have a historian talk about the sinking of the Larchmont, a disaster that has been called “New England’s Titanic”. It’s a true story of tragedy and heroism. Think Titanic meets The Finest Hours. Both libraries will be showing movies that week as well. I promise they will be much lighter viewing than Psycho, Titanic, or The Finest Hours!
Finally, Ben Franklin formed a group he called the Junto, for mutual betterment of its members. What we have is a Silent Reads society, where you can come and read with others quietly and get closer to completing our 25 in “25 Reading Challenge. Think of a book club without discussion. Check our online Calendar for details!
