A WORD FROM THE DIRECTOR

It's September and time to tune up the ol' noggin with some reading!

Nota bene, it is Library Card Sign Up Month, and although you may already have a library card, it would be a good idea to renew it for another three years when you get a chance. Look out for reminders to get or renew library cards around the city. This year’s theme is "A Library Card Hits All the Right Notes."

To help you do that, there will be a performance of the West African Kora at the Parlin on the 30th, and we will offer some beginner music lessons on the 10th, 17th, and 24th.  All I know is Do Re Mi MaWa…. –

No, that’s not it.  MAWA is the name we gave our collaboration with Everett, Washington.  MA plus WA makes MAWA. Here is a webpage from the Everett, Washington Public Library if you want to see what the other side of the country is saying about it. If you haven’t read Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown, in a stroke of luck you can participate in the book club about it, oar you can read Dark Tide by Stephen Puleo about the molasses flood in Boston.

On September 15th, come hear what your fellow residents have to say on a wide range of topics at FRED Talks. Knowledge wants to be shared, so if you are an expert on a topic, register to spread the wealth!  I missed hearing a resident talk about Herodotus the last time, and as a Classics major, it would have been nice to meet a kindred soul.

If you want to learn about animals, head to the Shute on the 22nd, and see some curious creatures presented by Curious Creatures.  If you want to learn about New England history through paranormal lore, come to the Parlin on the 29th!

September is

Library Card Sign Up Month!

This year’s theme, “A Library Card Hits All the Right Notes,” is a reminder that libraries offer something for everyone—no matter your age, background, or goals. Whether you’re checking out a classic story or trying something new, finding harmony at the library’s programs, finding your focus in a study room or vibing out in a cozy nook, or composing your future with new skills, there’s a seat in the front row at the library for you, and your library card is the ticket.
