January 1, 2024

From the Director

Books help get me through the winter. How about you?

I remind myself on January 1st each year that the days are getting longer. It helps get me through to next season. I wonder if, like me, you have a tough time with post holiday blahs. Now that the excitement of family, twinkly lights, presents, and good food starts to fade, I look ahead to cold for the next several months. I am not a winter person. January is a time for wondering why I live in New England.

And why do we make this time of year harder on ourselves by holding up New Year's resolutions as a tradition?! I don't need the reminder that I overindulged in December and should consider taking off 5-10 pounds.

Skiiers, snowboarders, and other winter sports enthusiasts, I hope you are out there rocking the season. I'm out there running with a headlight and icicles in my hair, dreaming of spring. Bah humbug! (Is it still appropriate to "bah humbug" in January?)

Ok, ok, enough grumbling...do consider checking out our New Year's resolution book display if you want to go that route. You can find more books on bettering yourself in the non-fiction 150s and 613s section. If you want to take up painting, try the 750s.

If you prefer to hunker down with a good book that will keep you occupied for hours, check out our new books display, new books ribbon in the Destiny catalog, and suggested readings in Libby. Come sit in the library by our fire. Enjoy some cookies and coffee/tea/cocoa from the Bartlett Room. Maybe even enjoy a program or two. Let's defeat those winter blahs together.

Happy New Year,
Melissa

Welcome to a new friend and goodbye to an old one
Sadly, our beloved library guinea pig, Charlotte, passed away immediately before the Christmas holiday. Charlotte was an affectionate guinea pig who calmly accepted love from the kids of Kingston. Many children had their first animal experience through Charlotte; she helped them become gentle and empathetic animal lovers. Our staff will miss her. We will be telling people that she "went to a farm," so parents can deal with the issue of death as they see fit.

On a happier note, we wish to welcome a new addition to our library family. This Abyssinian guinea pig comes to us by way of the Bedford Animal Shelter, where she was labeled with the name "Poppy." We are unsure if this will be her permanent name. This blond, curly beauty shows a lot of spunk. She has already climbed out of her playpen and made friends with one of the library director's cats. (The second cat friendship is a work in progress.) She likes lettuce, orange pepper, and special guinea pig treats. She has a few days to adjust to a new owner and will join us at the library on January 2nd. Stop by to meet her!
