January 22, 2024

From the Director
We are pleased to announce the completion of the next step in planning for our Outdoor Recreation Center. This has been a long project and it still has many more steps to the end. We are planning thoughtfully with an eye toward creating a beautiful amenity that will be a boon to Kingston, while challenging ourselves by trying to fund it with private and grant funding.

Last week, our landscape architect released a new draft plan for our project, adding some detailed landscape elements. He also released a budget for the project amounting to $1.25 million dollars, which is less than we anticipated. The Library Foundation has completed two grant proposals, which are due January 31st. We have about twenty more grant proposals to write. The private funds we are targeting support environmentally forward thinking projects, the arts, and projects that specifically benefit children, older adults, and the disabled. These speak to the construction of an outdoor play / learning area for children, water features, a pavilion, an adult wellness area, ADA compliant pathways, a meditation center, and a sensory garden / path.

Ways that you can help raise funds will be provided in coming months. We are targeting 2026 for construction, but that is dependent on finances.

See our website for the most up-to-date plan. In coming weeks, as the architect finishes up, we will show more details and 3d imagery that will better help you visualize the space.

Please stop by to talk to me about the project if you would like. I'd love to hear from you.

Enjoy your week,
Melissa

Grimm’s Fairy Tales

Fairy tales are often considered light reading for children. However, the original tales collected by the Brothers Grimm were told by and for adults. We’re going to read a few tales, from popular tales to intriguing curiosities, and consider why these tales continue to interest us today, as well as what we’ve kept and what we’ve changed in the telling and retelling these tales.

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were scholars interested in documenting and promoting the German language. They collected the fairy tales as part of that larger project; ironically, it was the tales, not the history of German, that stands as their best-known legacy.

The group will read selections from Grimm’s Fairy Tales from 16 to 30 January. You are welcome to join us for all or some of the discussions!

Our planned reading schedule is:
16 Jan: The Frog Prince, Rapunzel, Hansel & Gretel, Cinderella (Aschenputtel), and Little Red Riding Hood
23 Jan: Bremen Town Musicians, Tom Thumb (Thumbling), Tom Thumb’s Travels (Thumbling’s Travels), Sleeping Beauty (Briar Rose), and Snow White
30 Jan: Rumplestiltskin, Hans my Hedgehog, The Seven Ravens, The Brave Little Tailor, and Bluebeard

Kingston Community Library has copies of the text available. The group meets on Thursdays from 6–8. We hope to see you there!
