National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
|
|
September 30th marks Orange Shirt Day and National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Orange Shirt Day began in Williams Lake, BC in May 2013 as part of the St. Joseph Mission Residential School Commemoration Project and Reunion. Former student Phyllis Webstad shared her story of having her brand-new orange shirt, given to her by her grandmother, taken away on her first day at the school. Her story led to the formation of the Orange Shirt Society and the establishment of an annual Orange Shirt Day, which aims to raise awareness and foster meaningful dialogue about the lasting impacts of the residential school system in Canada, while promoting the message that "Every Child Matters." Each year on September 30th, people across the country are encouraged to wear the colour orange as a way to honour the Indigenous children who were lost to residential schools and to support the healing journey of those who survived. National Day for Truth and Reconciliation was first observed on September 30, 2021. It was established in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action, which were released in 2015. Call to Action #80 urged the federal government, “in collaboration with Aboriginal peoples, to establish, as a statutory holiday, a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to honour Survivors, their families, and communities, and to ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process.” For more information on Orange Shirt Day and National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, visit the following websites: Mental health support for residential school Survivors and their families is available through the Alberta Health Services Indigenous Support Line at 1-844-944-4744, the National Indian Residential School Crisis Line at 1-866-925-4419, and the national Hope for Wellness Help Line at 1-855-242-3310.
