33 Place Brugmann
Alice Austen
On the eve of the occupation, in the heart of Brussels, life for the residents of eight apartments at 33 Place Brugmann is about to change forever. Art student Charlotte Sauvin, daughter of a prominent architect in apartment 4L, knows all the details of the building and its people -- how light falls and voices echo, the distinct knock of her dearest friend Julian Raphaël, the eldest son of an art collector's family across the hall in 4R. But all that's familiar for Charlotte and the other residents of 33 begins to fracture as whispers of Nazi occupation become reality. The Raphaëls disappear, becoming refugees, nurses, soldiers, reluctant heroes. Masha, the seamstress on the 5th floor, deepens a dangerous affair with a wartime compatriot of Colonel Warlemont in 3R, a man far less feckless than he'd have his neighbors believe. And in the face of a perilous new reality, every member of this accidental community will discover they are not the person they believed themselves to be. When confronted with a cruel choice -- submit to the regime or risk their lives to resist -- each will discover the truth about what, and who, matters to them the most.

The Wild Lavender Bookshop
Jodi Thomas
The trees that circle Someday Valley near Honey Creek are dressed in their fall finest, providing a pretty backdrop for the local businesses, including the little bookshop loved by schoolteacher Cora Lee Buchanan. There, under the watchful eye of owner Noah O'Brien, Cora Lee and her sister Katherine meet each Wednesday. Their talk mostly revolves around one subject -- their father, known to everyone in town as Bear. Both Cora Lee and Katherine worry about Bear Buchanan. They've no idea Bear has a secret life of his own. As for the sisters, Katherine, beautiful and self-absorbed, is in search of her third husband, while Cora Lee is in love for the first time. On warm nights, she climbs up to her building's roof to chat with Noah and listen to the melody of the water below. Yet there is more intrigue afoot in Honey Creek. Andi Delane has arrived in town to hear the last wishes of the father she never met. She was shocked to get a letter from lawyer Jackson Landry, and she has few expectations of this mysterious will, or of Deputy Danny Davis who's been assigned to protect her. But fall always brings changes, and this year there will be enough to alter not just the lives of those who call Honey Creek home, but the future of Someday Valley itself.

Flirting Lessons
Jasmine Guillory
Avery Jensen is almost thirty, fresh off a breakup, and she's tired of always being so uptight and well-behaved. She wants to get a hobby, date around (especially other women), flirt with everyone she sees, wear something not from the business casual section of her closet -- all the fun stuff normal people do in their twenties. One problem -- Avery doesn't know where to start. She doesn't have a lot of dating experience, with men or women, and despite being self-assured at work, she doesn't have a lot of confidence when it comes to romance. Enter Taylor Cameron, Napa Valley's biggest flirt and champion heartbreaker. Taylor just broke up with her most recent girlfriend, and her best friend bet her that she can't make it until Labor Day without sleeping with someone. (Two whole months? Without sex? Taylor?!?!) So, she offers to give Avery flirting lessons. It should keep her busy and stop her from texting people she shouldn't. And it might take her mind off how inadequate she feels compared to her friends, who all seem much more settled and adult than Taylor. At first, Avery is stiff and nervous, but Taylor is patient and encouraging, and soon, Avery looks forward to their weekly lessons. With Taylor's help, Avery finally has the life she always wanted. The only issue is now she wants Taylor. Their attraction becomes impossible to ignore, despite them both insisting to themselves and everyone else that it isn't serious. When Taylor is forced to confront her feelings for Avery, she doesn't know what to do and, most importantly, if she's already ruined the best thing she's ever had.

Dead Broke, Colorado William W. Johnstone
The town got its unusual name when a pair of brokedown prospectors accidentally dropped a stick of dynamite in the Rockies -- and unwittingly unearthed a massive vein of silver. One of the two men dropped dead from excitement. The other one named the place ‘Dead Broke’ in honor of his dead broke companion and declared himself mayor of a brand-new mining town. Mayor Allane Auchenleck, better known as Nugget, put Dead Broke on the map. But when the silver market takes an unexpected nosedive, the bustling boomtown goes bust. And all hell breaks loose. Almost overnight, Dead Broke turns into a lawless hotbed of angry out-of-work miners and out-for-blood merchants. In desperation, Mayor Nugget considers a few hairbrained schemes like bringing in mail-order brides, building ice castles to attract tourists, even planting other minerals in the mines to fool investors. But Dead Broke needs law and order, so Nugget sends for top gun Mick MacMicking. Of course, a notorious gambler named Connor Boyle has other plans and, with his band of hired guns, he plans to blow Dead Broke off the map to get what he wants. For this town to survive, Nugget, Mick, a drunken lawman, and a woman gambler will have to put the dead back in Dead Broke and some cool-hand killers in the ground.

The Page Turner
Viola Shipman
Emma Page grew up the black sheep in a bookish household, raised to believe that fine literature is the only worthy type of fiction. Her parents, self-proclaimed ‘serious’ authors who run their own vanity press, The Mighty Pages, mingle in highbrow social circles that look down on anything too popular or mainstream, while her sister Jess is a powerful social media influencer whose stylish reviews can make or break a novel. Hiding her own romance manuscript from her disapproving parents, Emma finds inspiration at the family cottage among the ‘fluff’ they despise -- the juicy summer romances that belonged to her late grandmother. But a chance discovery unearthed from her Gigi's belongings reveals a secret that has the power to ruin her parents' business and destroy their reputation in the industry, a secret that has already fallen into the hands of an unscrupulous publishing insider with a grudge to settle. Now Emma must decide -- as much as she's dreamed of the day when her parents are forced to confront their own egos, can she really just sit back and watch The Mighty Pages be exposed and their legacy destroyed?

Memorial Days
Geraldine Brooks
It was Memorial Day, 2019, when Geraldine Brooks received news that her husband Tony Horwitz had collapsed and died, far from home, in the middle of his own book tour. The complex tasks required in the face of such a sudden death left her no time to properly grieve for him. Three years later, still feeling broken and bereft, she booked a flight to a remote island off the coast of Tasmania. Alone on a rugged stretch of coast, she revisited a thirty-five-year marriage filled with risk, adventure, humor, and love. There, she pondered the ways other cultures deal with mourning and finally seized the time and space she needed for her own grief. |
