Spring again. Friends Book Sale is on the horizon again. Dates are April 24,25, and 26 during regular library hours. Time for your favorite book shopping at Amazing Prices!
Please gather up all the books you no longer want to keep and donate them to our sale. We appreciate donations of books, CDs and DVDs in good condition. (We do not accept any magazines, textbooks or tapes.) However, if you are looking for a good book right now, check out our floor-to ceiling Friends sale shelves in the library, with selections monitored and changed by our volunteers. Also see a variety of other monthly programs offered by library staff. These range from story times for kids to Mah-jongg for adults, and include book club, tech help, book and author speakers, computers, crafts and reference services among others.
Thank you for your unwavering interest and support. We couldn’t do this without you, our faithful members.
See you at the library.

What’s happening at the Library...
Happy spring Friends! It’s time to energize after another seemingly endless winter and there’s much going on at the library to facilitate that.
With Miss Amanda out on maternity leave the past few months I have had the opportunity to return to my library roots in children’s services to do preschool storytime on Tuesday mornings. I have to confess, it is one of the highlights of my week. Books and early literacy activities such as fingerplays, songs, flannelboards, dance, and more are all selected according to the week’s theme and age level. There is so much more going on than just reading picture books! There’s word associations such as rhyming, phonological awareness which is the recognition that words are combinations of sounds, dialogical awareness where children can respond to questions about what is going on in a book, numerical skills, and all types of play-based learning activities that go in to each week’s storytime. Repetition is important too, so each week we open and close with songs that incorporate simple ASL signs, a flannelboard activity where we hide a mouse underneath a house and kids call out the color of the house to find the mouse. In the 30+ years that I have worked professionally, research in to early learning development has reinforced the importance of these activities for reading and learning readiness once the storytimers reach kindergarten. I make it all a fun experience for them and hopefully provide some inspiration for things to do at home.
We wouldn’t be able to do all of this without the support of the Friends! Your gifts to the Library allow us to purchase books, storytime program supplies, and training for staff to hone their skills to provide the best possible learning activities for our youngest patrons. Our summer reading program is entirely due to your support, and we are immeasurably grateful for all you do!
Stop by and see me on Tuesday mornings to see it all in action!

New North Shore Library Buildout and Fundraising Update
The North Shore Library will move from its current location in Glendale to the OneNorth Development, which is just north of Brown Deer Road and west of Port Washington Road in Bayside. It will be super convenient to 1-43 and Port Washington Road. The new library will occupy a 24,608-square-foot space on the ground level of this mixed-use building.
The buildout of the new library space has not yet started, but we are hopeful that it will start soon. Fundraising is still on going and we are excited to introduce some new fundraising strategies.
During the Month of March 2025, all capital campaign donations given to the Friends of the North Shore Library or directly to the library itself will be matched up to $250.000! Julia and David Uihlein have graciously agreed to donate for this matching program. We are so grateful to them for their support of the new North Shore Library.
Other fundraising/naming opportunities include: paver bricks, shelves, junior librarian experiences and shelving endcaps. Check out all the naming opportunities available and how you can help us write "Our Next Chapter" at our new home.
