This prehistoric party is the roaring kickoff to the Summer Learning Program at Simpson Library, Unearth a Story! Drop in any time from 10:00 - 1:00 for a dino-sized dose of FREE fun for all ages, including: - Hot dogs and cookies: fuel for future fossil hunters!
- Games and crafts for kids: dig, discover, and create like a true paleontologist!
- Adopt your very own Dino!
- Tons more prehistoric surprises!

WATCH CATERPILLARS GROW INTO BEAUTIFUL BUTTERFLIES! See nature in action as caterpillars grow and eventually encase themselves into their chrysalises. They’ll develop inside until finally emerging as beautiful Painted Lady butterflies! Caterpillars were delivered May 7. They are expected to start forming their chrysalis around May 21. They will emerge about 7 - 10 days after forming their chrysalis. Butterflies will be released into the wild seven days after the third caterpillar emerges from its chrysalis. |

Each time you visit the library between May 30 and July 1, you may enter your name into a raffle to win a free backpack! *Children entering Kindergarten through 12th grade are eligible to participate. *One raffle entry is allowed per child per library visit. *Child must be present to receive a raffle ticket. *Pick up your raffle ticket at the lower level circulation desk. *Children may select their favorite color backpack. *School supply colors vary. Supplies include a single subject notebook, one portfolio folder, one pencil bag, two pencils, two pens, four crayons, one glue stick, one pencil sharpener, and one eraser. |

June 11 Dining with Dinosaurs Sure, you know T-Rex was the meat-eating king and brontosaurus munched on leaves, but what else was on the dino dining menu during the Mesozoic era. You will be surprised and inspired to learn about dino diets and how scientists can tell which dinosaurs ate what just from looking at fossils. You will get to make your own chomping dinosaur to take home. |
June 25 Engineer a Dinosaur You can be an engineer designing your own dinosaur using marshmallows as joints and straws as bones. |
July 2: America 250--1776 Learn about the events surrounding the American Revolutions and play American Revolution BINGO. Lots of prizes for everyone! |
July 9: America 250--Forgotten Heroes of the Revolutionary War Who led the Minute Women in the fight for independence? How did a German baker help win the American Revolution? Find out the answers to these questions and more at our Forgotten Heroes of the Revolutionary War event. Everyone will have the opportunity to decorate and eat their own gingerbread cookie! |
July 16 Dino Poo Detective You are a paleontologist working to discover whether the “dinosaur poo” belongs to a herbivore or carnivore dinosaur. Dig through the dirt (chocolate pudding) to find clues that will help determine the diet of the dinosaur. (Foods that may be used may include chocolate pudding, coconut, green food dye, gummy snacks, pretzel sticks, or hard candy. Let us know if your child has a food allergy.) |
July 23 Cookie Excavation Have fun uncovering artifacts like an archaeologist by carefully excavating chocolate chips from a cookie while using an excavation grid. You will learn about the tools and terms used by archaeologists on a dig site! |
July 30 Hieroglyphs/Write like an Egyptian Hieroglyphics is a writing system created by the Ancient Egyptians over 5,000 years ago. Archeologists have found many artifacts with hieroglyphics that tell us what life was like in Ancient Egypt. In this craft, you will learn about hieroglyphics and how to write your own message! |
August 6 Create Your Own Petroglyphs Explore the world of ancient rock art! In this hands-on activity, you’ll learn about petroglyphs, which are stone carvings used by early cultures to tell stories and communicate with symbols. Then, create your own petroglyphs using air dry clay, wooden tools, and paint. Unleash your creativity and carve your personal story into “stone.” |
August 13 Pottery Dig Pottery is often found at archeological sites. In this activity, you will explore a dig site for potsherds (pieces of pottery-in this case made from paper) and assemble a paper pot that you can color and take home. |
