From the Director... Tom Shilts Hello! As many of you are aware, Cindi Place has retired and I am the new director. Cindi has done a wonderful job in her time here: securing funding for innovative new programs and services, extending the library building's physical accessibility, reaching out to underserved populations, and fostering a positive work culture where staff are encouraged to bring their avocational interests to the job. I can't hope to be another Cindi, but I want to bring the same energy and can-do spirt to Bellaire Public Library. Here's a little more about me. I am originally from Sault Ste. Marie and I received my bachelor's degree from Lake Superior State University. My library science degree (MSLS) is from Clarion University of Pennsylvania, and I have an additional master's degree in American history from the University of North Dakota. I have worked for several public libraries around the upper Midwest, but for the last 21 years I was a youth services librarian at Capital Area District Library-Okemos. (Please ask me for a children's book recommendation sometime!) Though not all librarians are big readers, most of us are. I'm particularly fond of children's picture books, adult nonfiction, historical fiction (at all levels), and young adult horror. But I will read pretty much anything that looks interesting. Some of my favorite authors and illustrators are Deborah Hopkinson, John Hendrix, Chris Van Dusen, Marla Frazee, Nathan Hale, Erik Larson, Judith Flanders, and Alys Clare. I think "Jacob Have I Loved" by Katherine Paterson is one of the most beautifully written children books of all time, and I believe that everyone should have access to books that they can become equally passionate about. And that's where the library comes in. Stay tuned.

Nature's Best Hope by Douglas W. Tallamy Nature's Best Hope: A New Approach to Conservation that starts in Your Yard is the perfect book to pick up this time of year as we work in our landscaping and gardens. This book shifted my mindset completely on what I put into the ground. With all the habitat loss and ecosystem destruction, it can feel overwhelming. Tallamy is a force in the area of conservation and this book is a perfect guide on where to start. Doing what you can, where you are, with the resources available to you can make a huge impact if we all commit to doing it. Shrink your lawn a little and plant some oak trees! Sneak some native wildflowers in next to your existing hostas and hydrangeas and see how happy you'll make your local birds and insects. This book is helpful and easy to read. I also read the young readers edition with my two sons last summer. It's never too early to teach the kids how to be a good member of our ecosystem.
