A Note from the Interim Director

As many of you know, Tom has accepted a new position at another library. While we will deeply miss his kind, genuine, and knowledgeable leadership, we remain grateful for the many ways he touched our board, staff, patrons, and community. His impact will be felt for years to come.

I am honored to step into the role of Interim Director during this time of transition. Our staff is truly incredible—each one is stepping up, taking on new responsibilities, and working together to ensure the library continues to thrive.

In the meantime, we are committed to keeping the library strong, welcoming, and forward-looking. Thank you for your continued support as we move into this next chapter together.

A Note from The Bellaire Library Board President:

As many of our loyal patrons know, Bellaire Library along with many small rural Libraries
depend on getting books through the State-wide network, called MeL (Michigan
Electronic Library). Bellaire Library alone, borrows one third of the material requests
from other Libraries using MeL and lends out one fourth of our collection. Michigan
may lose the funds already allotted from the Federal Government, for the LSTA line item if the
Michigan House current budget passes without this line item in the budget. This loss
would hurt most Rural Libraries that depend on MelCat, a data catalog, coordinated by
the Library of Michigan. Please let our Michigan Representative, John Roth and Senator
DeMoose know that LSTA funding for MeL is critical to our small rural libraries. Your
voice matters, as the budget deadline is normally Oct. 1. Thank you for your
patronage and support of Libraries.

- Mary Edens, BPL, BOT

Here is more on the topic from, Michigan Library Association as of 9/19/25:
“As budget talks continue in Lansing, it is essential for library advocates to keep
reaching out to legislators. We must ensure they understand the importance of library
funding—and that an LSTA line item must be included in the final budget to unlock $5.6
million in federal funds already awarded to Michigan. Without it, vital statewide
programs like the Michigan eLibrary (MeL) and MeLCat will lose critical support.
 Urge them to voice support for the LSTA line item in a final state budget.
 Encourage them to talk to appropriations leadership about the importance
of this funding. ( Note: Senator DeMoose is on the appropriations
committee)
 Highlight that this $5.6 million of federal money supports widely used
programs like MeL and MeLCat, which provide a $26.96 return on
investment for every $1 spent.
 Remind them of the widespread support across Michigan: 78% of
respondents in a recent statewide poll said that IMLS funding from the
federal government should remain as part of the federal budget, and
Michigan can only access those funds if the LSTA line item is included in
the state budget.”

Nikki’s Book Recommendation Corner
The Road to Tender Hearts by Annie Hartnett

The Road to Tender Hearts should absolutely be made into a movie. It reminded me of the film, Little Miss Sunshine. A cross-country road trip with a dysfunctional family, a crew of misfits. The leader of the bunch is PJ, a nearly broke alcoholic, once millionaire lottery-winner with a cat that predicts people's death. He's the new guardian of his niece and nephew who embark on this adventure with him. Full disclosure: this book is a wild ride of dark humor, suffering, curse words, butted up next to tenderness, forgiveness and redemption... in its own way. Sometimes you want to shake PJ and cry for the kids that were thrown into the situation, but Hartnett has a way of highlighting the complexity of life. How deeply flawed humans can still be loveable, and how life can be beautiful and difficult all in the same breath. Tragedy and triumph continuously intertwine in this rollercoaster of a book. You'll laugh, you'll cry...

Apostle's Cove : a novel
by William Kent Krueger

"A few nights before Halloween, as Cork O'Connor gloomily ruminates on his upcoming sixtieth birthday, he receives a call from his son, Stephen, who is working for a nonprofit dedicated to securing freedom for unjustly incarcerated inmates. Stephen tellshis father that twenty years ago, as the newly elected sheriff of Tamarack County, Cork was responsible for sending an Ojibwe man named Axel Boshey to prison for a brutal murder that Stephen is certain he did not commit. Cork feels compelled to reinvestigate the crime, but that is easier said than done. Not only is it a closed case but Axel Boshey is, inexplicably, refusing to help. The deeper Cork digs, the clearer it becomes that there are those in Tamarack County who are willing once again to commit murder to keep him from finding the truth. At the same time, Cork's seven-year-old grandson has his own theory about the investigation: the Windigo, that mythic cannibal ogre, has come to Tamarack County...and it won't leave until it has sated its hunger for human blood"
