From the Director... Tom Shilts Fall is a great time of year to be outside. Temperatures are moderate, the leaves are in full color, and the bugs are (mostly) gone. It's the perfect time to check out our StoryWalk, which is along a short trail on the grounds of Antrim Conservation District. What is StoryWalk? It's a way for families to enjoy children's literature and outdoor exercise at the same time. Pages from a picture book are put in a weather-resistant frame and placed at regular intervals along a pathway. Participants stop at each station, read the page, and move on to the next stop. Some StoryWalks are situated in grassy city parks or playgrounds; others, such as ours in Bellaire, are along a wooded trail. Our current StoryWalk features Jim Arnosky's "Every Autumn Comes the Bear." The book is beautifully illustrated and tells the realistic story of a black bear who is exploring a rocky hilltop as she prepares to hibernate for the winter. The Bellaire StoryWalk features a new title every six weeks or so. Give it a visit if you are up for an autumn outing!

The Comfort of Crows by Margaret Renkl & Raw Deal by Robert Downes If you love to sit out in a lawn chair in your backyard and just observe the birds, flowers, moon phases, and critters like I do, I highly encourage you to pick up The Comfort of Crows by Margaret Renkl. I’ve been slowly reading this one all year alongside the season changes. It is the current Reese Witherspoon book club pick and for the most enduring reason, Renkl was Witherspoon’s english teacher. Give it up for teachers! Renkl lives in Nashville, Tennessee and has seen the city grow up around her. Even still she works hard to keep her small slice of the city wild. Planting pollinator gardens and creating a welcome home for birds, snakes, and even squirrels. Her perspective on the wildlife we share this earth with is eye opening and lovely. She’s really doing her part. As a bonus, her incredibly talented brother, Billy Renkl, created gorgeous art to accompany her essays. The audiobook version is available on Libby if you’d prefer to listen to her soothing, light southern drawl. I’m just starting to dive into Raw Deal, but I really want to encourage you to come listen to Downes’ presentation at the library! I’m a homeschool mom and my sons and I are currently learning about The People of Three Fires, the tribal alliance from our region that is talked about in this book. I’m glad I’ll have this resource to pass on to my kids. It’s important to read and learn history from multiple sources and perspectives.
