A Note from the Director:

There is something about October that makes me want to slow down and notice things—the changing leaves outside the library, the return of familiar routines, the conversations happening at the front desk, and the steady stream of people coming through our doors. After the excitement of celebrating 130 years, I'm especially grateful for the ordinary days, too. They are where so much of the library's story continues to happen.

130 Years—and Still Connecting

Our 130th Anniversary celebration was a wonderful reminder that the Bellaire Public Library has never been just a building full of books. It is people—people who give their time, share their talents, tell their stories, bake the cupcakes, dig into history, hang decorations, welcome guests, take pictures, make crafts, spread the word, and simply show up.
To every person who put their hand—and their heart—into making our celebration special: thank you. You helped us celebrate 130 years of stories, service, and community, and reminded us that the best chapters are the ones we write together.

From My Reading Chair

If you know me, you probably know that historical fiction is my favorite kind of read—and World War II historical fiction has a particularly large piece of my reading heart. I love getting lost in a story while also learning something about the people, places, and events that shaped our history.
So I've been thinking... what if we started a Historical Fiction Book Club?
We could read stories from different time periods, explore the history behind them, and, of course, talk about whether the book kept us turning pages!
I'm just putting the idea out there for now. Would you be interested in joining me? It would be great if you could take this short survey to let me know what you think about it:

A Note from The Friends of the Bellaire Public Library:

Special thanks to all the “Friends of the Library” who so generously made the 130th anniversary open house on Sept. 12th, a success. The music of 1896 was great, all delicious donated treats, and of course the wonderful historical slide show presentation of the founding and past library locations. Also, thanks to those “friends” volunteering to make yarn dolls, decorated ladies’ hats, put together games that reflected the turn of the century and dressed up! It made the event feel fun.
Thanks also to the Bellaire Library planners, The Antrim Review, and Bellaire Historical Society for their assistance as well.
If you are not yet a member of “Friends of the Library,” it is easy to join! It's a perfect way to give back to the community. This coming fall and winter we are looking for help organizing our holiday fundraiser, and help at the library during the Bellaire Chamber of Commerce soup cook-off/ Light up the Night event. There is a link on our website where you can join The Friends of the Library https://www.bellairelibrary.org or feel free to call us 231-530-8814.

There’s Always this Year: On Basketball and Ascension
By Hanif Abdurraqib
Reading a book like this feels like such a gift. The way Abdurraqib cracks himself open and shares his life with his readers is a level of vulnerability I don’t take for granted. Especially for a millennial Black man in America, who has been taught to put on a specific, tough-faced mask in order to survive. I am indebted to him for this peek behind the facade to see the beauty and softness that lives intertwined with the “masculine” basketball fandom. The juxtaposition of it all melds together to create one of the most moving coming of age accounts I’ve ever read.
Abdurraqib is a poet, and nothing engages me more than a poet writing in prose because they still write poetically. If I’m being honest, I don’t give two hoots about basketball or sports in general, other than that feeling of collective humanity you feel at a live sporting event. I get embarrassingly weepy— close to bursting to tears—when I hear an arena of people chant or sing in unison, and maybe that’s why I enjoyed There’s Always this Year. It’s undoubtedly about basketball, so if you love the game then you’ll love this book, but if you crave a peek into someone else’s life in a way that builds connection and community understanding (which I always do) you’ll also love this one.
This is written from the perspective of someone who grew up watching LeBron James as a Cleveland Cavaliers fan. They are the same age and he highlights the parallels of their lives as young Black men in America (Ohio specifically) and how they’re both from cities the rest of the country wrote off, forgot about, that folks fled from. This winding story is a love song to the hometown heroes. Not just the ones that end up on billboards, but the ones that were legends to the kids watching them on the courts of their neighborhoods. Hanif Abdurraqib grew up in Columbus, Ohio and made his way tripping and flailing to becoming one of the most gorgeous writers I’ve ever encountered. His reflections on personal, as well as collective grief, are the most insightful I’ve come across. And because I feel like I’ll never do this book proper justice I’ll leave you with a blurb from the back of the book written by probably my favorite writer of all time, also a poet that sometimes writes prose, Ross Gay:
“Hanif Abdurraqib again shows us new ways to be a social critic, a dreamer, a historian, and a lover of hoop. But— and this feels especially moving— he shows us how he wonders about, and how he is transformed in the wondering about, what it means to belong to a place. And you know by place I mean the people, the memories, the sorrows, the tomorrows, who are that place. And by all that I mean the love.”
I think the reason I want to shout from the rooftops about this book is because it’s not something a forty-something year old white lady living in the middle of nowhere— like myself—would normally pick up, and that bums me out. This story is for everyone. It’s for people that grew up just like Hanif Abdurraqib and it’s for folks who didn’t, in equal measure. The greatest part about books is they are a window into lives that are a mystery to some and a mirror to others. The windows and mirrors concept in big in the library community. This is a friendly reminder to peek into some windows (not like that). Maybe take a break from the mirror every once in a while. It's available at the library.

The French Illusion by John Grisham
The French Illusion
by John Grisham

#1 New York Times bestselling author John Grisham delivers a gripping, suspenseful page-turner about a Paris honeymoon gone horribly wrong--and the nightmare that follows. After Paul and Chelsea Tanner's fairytale wedding, their future is full of promise. But their honeymoon to Paris takes a dark, shocking turn when they are kidnapped while on a day trip to the French countryside. Who would target them, and why? It turns out this is not the first crime of its kind. The search for clues soon stretches across borders, with the FBI, CIA, and French Intelligence trying to work together to put the pieces of the puzzle together. Propulsive and surprising, The French Illusion is an unmistakable Grisham thrill ride--gripping and impossible to put down.
Hollow Bones
by Jodi Picoult

#1 NEW YORK TIMES AND USA TODAY BESTSELLER - From the acclaimed author of By Any Other Name comes a riveting novel about the risks we take to protect the ones we love in a world where crisis is always just around the corner. On September 11, 2001, when Molly Fitzgerald was only two months old, her mother went to an appointment at the World Trade Center and never came home. Her father and the stepmother who raised her couldn't have loved her more, but she still grew up with a healthy dread of disasters. Now an adult, she runs the Rhode Island Department for Emergency Preparedness, mapping out ways to save lives during storms, epidemics, and airplane crashes. She and her husband, Jesse--a police polygraph expert with his own history of crisis--have found a love that is a solace in a dangerous world. But then the unexpected upends their new marriage, leading them both to question everything they thought they knew. Moving between past and present, Hollow Bones is an epic story of the lies we tell ourselves as we write the narratives of our lives, the plans we design to protect ourselves at the worst moments, and the ties that bind mothers and daughters.
Hollow Bones by Jodi Picoult
The Pirate Queen: A Novel from the New York Times Bestselling Author of the Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon
The Pirate Queen
by Ariel Lawhon

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - A sweeping historical adventure inspired by the life of Grace O'Malley, the legendary Irish folk heroine who risked everything to defend her people. Venture onto the high seas with the thrilling latest from the New York Times bestselling author of The Frozen River and I Was Anastasia. Grace O'Malley was born to be a sea captain. But despite her natural skill on the water, Grace learns early that her dreams of a life at the helm are not compatible with the expectations of her noble family. As the only daughter of a powerful chieftain, her role is to secure a strong alliance and bear children. But when she's sent to foster with a nearby clan, Grace falls for a clever and open-minded second son--a man she cannot have. Married off against her will to a brutal warrior, Grace performs her duty, all the while gathering followers loyal to her, and consolidating her husband's power, only to be ousted from his lands. But this betrayal offers Grace the opportunity to return to sea, finally leading clan O'Malley's mighty fleet. Just as she finds true independence, Queen Elizabeth's incursions into Ireland grow bolder and Grace must fight to defend her land, her ships, and the people she loves most against the cruel and power-hungry English deputies, who will stop at nothing to check her influence. Keenly observed and fiercely written, Ariel Lawhon's new action-packed novel channels the untamed beauty and harsh realities of sixteenth-century Ireland, as seen through the eyes of an unforgettable heroine who rightly became the Pirate Queen of Ireland.
