A Note from the Director:

It’s hard to believe summer is right around the corner, and at the library that means one thing… Summer Reading!
We’re kicking things off with our Summer Reading Registration Event on Saturday, May 30 from 11:00 AM–1:00 PM at the library. Stop in, get signed up, and see what we have planned!
Our official Summer Reading Kick-Off Program will be Friday, June 5 at 1:30 PM at the Elementary School. This event is open to everyone — you do not have to be a registered student to attend. Bring the kids, bring a friend, and come join the fun!
We’ve had a great start to 2026 with some really wonderful programs, and I’m excited to keep building our summer and fall calendar. As always, we welcome your ideas — if there’s something you’d like to see at the library, please let us know. We love shaping programs around our community.
  • A library card is one of the best deals around — free entertainment all summer long, whether you’re at home or at the cabin.
  • This time of year we start seeing a lot of “cabin readers” — patrons stocking up on books before heading to the lake!
  • Reading outside counts! Porch reading, hammock reading, camping reading… it all counts toward Summer Reading.
  • Up North summer rule: always pack sunscreen… and a library book.
Your library card is basically a free pass to all kinds of things — not just books! If you haven’t stopped in lately, you might be surprised by what we offer.
Hope to see you soon!

Learn about the history of the trail and its new guide map.

Nikki’s Book Recommendation Corner
Devotions by Mary Oliver

I am a notorious procrastinator so it makes sense I'm choosing a poetry book the month after Poetry Month, which is celebrated in April. I thought of it because of the lovely time I had at a program here at the library with our resident poet, Yvonne. There ended up being four of us, drinking tea, eating cookies, learning about poetry techniques, sharing beautiful poems, and doing a little writing of our own. Be sure to keep an eye out for programs like this in the future. I'm always reluctant to leave my house and go to such things, but every time I do I'm so glad I did. These small community meet-ups always fill my cup and bring me joy.
In the past I have been a little intimidated by poetry. It's a bit like jazz music to me. A little all over the place, not always structured, is it supposed to rhyme? Sometimes there is a pattern, sometimes not? What is a meter? The dissecting of poems can be technical, but I've learned I don't have to be. I can just read poems and find the beauty in the words and cadence, or I can skip the ones that don't speak to me and realize not everything is for me. Just like music or paintings, we're all moved differently by different expressions of art. I'm saying this to give you permission to try reading some poems and take what you want from them. Don't take it too seriously.
We are lucky enough to live in an area where we are surrounded by pristine nature, and nobody does nature poetry like Mary Oliver. Devotions is a thick collection full of her greatest hits, so this is a perfect place to start if you're new to her, or a perfect place to revisit or meet new favorites. As spring comes swooping in, there's nothing like grabbing your coffee and opening up a book to poems about being amongst the trees and wild geese flying. It's a beautiful form of meditation that makes my heartrate calm and reminds me to appreciate the unfurling, chartreuse leaves and the call of the woodcock in the greening field.

How Flowers Made Our World: The Story of Nature's Revolutionaries by David George Haskell
How Flowers Made Our World: The Story of Nature's Revolutionaries
by David George Haskell

An exquisite exploration of the power of flowers, placing them at the center of the story of how evolution created the world we know today. We live on a floral planet, yet flowers don't get the credit they deserve. We admire them for their aesthetics, not their power. In this exquisite exploration of the role flowers played in creating the world we know today, David George Haskell observes, smells, and studies flowers such as magnolias, orchids, and roses, as well as fascinating but less celebrated flowers such as seagrasses and tea to show us what we've been missing. Flowers are beautiful revolutionaries.

Judge Stone by James Patterson
Judge Stone
by James Patterson

#1 New York Times Bestseller Academy Award winning actress Viola Davis and the world's #1 bestselling author James Patterson's Judge Stone delivers first-class courtroom drama, small-town excitement, and strong characters all wrapped in a moral dilemma. Tense, readable, and relevant. "With Davis's razor-sharp emotional insight and Patterson's mastery of rocket-fuel pacing, this is the dream team to deliver an up-all-night read that will keep the group chat buzzing." --Oprah Daily
The most respected citizen in Union Springs, Alabama (population 3,314), is Judge Mary Stone. She holds two responsibilities sacred: running her family farm and presiding over her courtroom. It's there she draws the most controversial case in the history of the South. Criminally, it's open-and-shut. Ethically, there is no middle ground. Essentially, it's a choice between life and death. No judge can satisfy everyone. It would be dangerous to try. But Judge Stone is willing to fight to bring justice to the people and place she loves.
