The Spirit of Christmas Past: Four Centuries of Christmas in New England

Tuesday, November 17th

6:30-7:30 PM

Community Room

This richly illustrated talk by Historic New England's Kenneth C. Turino traces the evolving celebration of Christmas in New England. Follow the development of the holiday, from the time it was outlawed in seventeenth-century New England through the beginning of the twenty-first century, when all the trappings of a traditional Christmas were in place.

For many, the celebration of Christmas today is the most important holiday of the year. But many of the customs that we take for granted as part of today's festivities and religious celebrations are products of a more recent history. Find out how Christmas was transformed from a rowdy celebration into a family-centered event. Discover how the Christmas tree became popular, halls were decked, and Santa Claus came to town.

Thirty Years of Caregiving for a Man the World Overlooked

Saturday, December 5th

10:00 AM
Community Room

Join Robin Carlson as she discusses her book, " A Sage Sits In My Kitchen : Thirty Years of Caregiving for a Man the World Overlooked".

This remarkable story is about a man who had lived a tragic life of institutions and homelessness only to find a young human service worker whose heart was captured by his willingness to trust her. Two lives intersected as one needed deep understanding and the other a purpose to fulfill. It turns out they were on the same journey that was destined to change them both.

Books will be available for purchase.

November Artist: Susanne Larkham

Susanne Larkham is a pastel artist based in Manchester, New Hampshire. She creates paintings rooted in realism and shaped by memory, emotion, and lived experience. Drawn to light, color, and familiar forms — not just as they appear, but as they are remembered and carried within us. Working in soft pastels allows her to engage directly with saturated pigment, building layered hues that echo the way moments overlap, linger, and quietly reveal meaning over time. While her subjects often come from observation, the work is not about documentation. It’s about recognition — the feeling of seeing something and realizing it already lives inside you.

Many collectors tell Susan they choose to live with my work in deeply personal spaces. She considers it a privilege to create paintings that offer a companionable presence — work that settles in, holds memory, and invites reflection. You can view Susanne’s work all month long on the main floor!
