Announcements In honor of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Carnegie Corporation donated $30,000 to the Somerville Public Library! Philanthropist Andrew Carnegie believed that public libraries were "cradles of democracy," and funded the construction of 1,681 free public libraries in the United States between 1886 and 1917. Carnegie Libraries 250 is a special initiative celebrating this by awarding $10,000 to each Carnegie Library still operating as a public library today, and Somerville represents three of these 1,280 still serving their communities. |
