Milne Mail: David & Joyce Milne Public Library, Weekly Newsletter
Friday, July 31, 2026

Hello, and Happy Friday!

The David & Joyce Milne Public Library is developing a new strategic plan for the next five years (2027 - 2032), and we want to hear from you!

Our community survey is now open, and we encourage everyone to participate. Your feedback will help guide the library's priorities, services, programs, collections, and spaces for years to come. Whether you use the library every week, visit occasionally, or haven't stopped by in a while, your perspective is valuable.

Please take a few minutes to complete the survey and share your thoughts about the future of the library.

In addition to the survey, we invite community members to participate in one of our upcoming focus groups. While the survey helps us gather broad community feedback, the focus groups provide an opportunity for more in-depth discussion (registration required).

- Thursday, September 3rd at 6:00 p.m.
- Friday, September 4th at 11:00 a.m.
- Saturday, September 5th at 1:00 p.m.
- Tuesday, September 8th at 6:00 p.m.

The survey and focus groups are both important opportunities to help shape the next chapter of the David & Joyce Milne Public Library. Thank you for sharing your ideas and helping us build a library that reflects the needs and aspirations of our community.

Ask an Arborist! 🌳

Join arborist, Ken Gooch, Tuesday, August 4th at 1:00 p.m. for a discussion about tree and shrub health.

Ken will discuss correct pruning methods for healthier shrubs and trees while also elaborating on why newly planted plants sometimes fail to thrive in our gardens and landscapes.

This program is co-hosted by the Williamstown Garden Club.  All welcome!

Read a Book to Cooper the Dog! 🐶

Dogs love stories, but they can't read! Maybe you could come and read to Cooper? He would really love that! Read a book to Cooper Tuesday, August 4th starting at 2:30 p.m.

In order to give everyone a turn, we will be limiting the reading time to about 10 minutes for each reader.

If you want to sign up for a specific time-slot, you can do that by calling Debbie in the Children's Room at (413) 597 - 8352 or by emailing dbaker@cwmars.org.

Take a Guided Journey Right in Town! 🍃

Join us Saturday, August 8th at 11:00 a.m. for a guided journey focused on resistance and remembrance at The Spruces.

This guided ‘living archive walk’ travels from The Spruces parking area along the Mohawk Trail multi‑use path and Hoosic River Nature Trail to the Lehovec Natural Area, treating the river corridor as a contested memory landscape rather than mere scenery.

Participants will learn to read the riverbanks and adjacent fields as a layered archive. Along the way, the group will search for botanical markers such as periwinkle clusters, yucca, and cedar.

Battle for the Nerf Championship 🎯

Teens ages 12 - 17, join us for an after-hours nerf blaster and pizza party Saturday, August 8th at 5:00 p.m. where you'll test your skills in a series of challenges!

Please note that all participants will be required to have a parental approval form signed to attend this event to be picked up and returned to the Teen Librarian in the Children's Room.

Pizza, drinks, fruit, and dessert will be provided!

Walk the Natural Bridge with Us! 🌲

Join us Sunday, August 9th at 11:00 a.m. for a walk and picnic at the Natural Bridge located in North Adams!

This guided journey aims to connect the park’s marble quarry, industrial dam, and former sculpture garden to deeper Mohican histories of hunting, gathering, travel, and spiritual practice along the Housatonic River Valley.

This walk invites participants to experience the arch in two registers at once: as a dramatic geological formation shaped over millennia and as a landmark within a living Indigenous landscape.
