Concerning the IMLS Executive Order:
Recent federal decisions have cast serious doubt on the future of library services across the United States - including those provided by the David & Joyce Milne Public Library. On March 14th, 2025, President Trump signed Executive Order 14238, which calls for the reduction of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to the fullest extent allowed by law. Just over two weeks later, on March 31st, all IMLS staff were placed on administrative leave, effectively halting the agency’s operations.
The IMLS is the primary federal agency supporting libraries and museums nationwide. In the last fiscal year, it awarded over $266 million in grants and research support - less than 0.003% of the federal budget. These funds power vital programs like literacy initiatives, access to digital resources, and cultural preservation efforts.
The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) receives roughly $3.6 million annually through the IMLS’s Grants to States program.
As part of National Library Week, yesterday, April 10th, was Take Action for Libraries Day, a day to rally advocates to support libraries.Make sure to take one of these actions and then pass along ala.org/ShowUp to encourage your friends, family, and neighbors to act alongside you.

Seeking Saturday Shelvers |
|
We are thrilled that circulation is increasing here at the Milne, but that means we also have a bit more shelving to do! In addition to all of the help we receive throughout the week from so many dedicated volunteers, we are requesting some shelving assistance on Saturdays as well. Ideally, we'd love to have a list of helpers who could come in on the occasional Saturday.
Please email kwilliams@cwmars.org if you are interested! |

Children will become "Art Detectives" as they search for particular shapes, colors, and writing. They will next create their own collage with shapes, enhanced with colored pencils and markers. |

We have exciting news to share! The David & Joyce Milne Public Library is proud to be chosen to be part of Libraries Transforming Communities: Accessible Small and Rural Communities, an American Library Association initiative that provides community engagement and accessibility resources to small and rural libraries to help them better serve people with disabilities.
With this $10,000 grant, we are planning to make our building and programming more accessible to our patrons. We plan to have community conversations in the summer to discuss this initiative. More information to come!
Libraries Transforming Communities: Accessible Small and Rural Communities is an initiative of the American Library Association (ALA) in collaboration with the Association for Rural & Small Libraries (ARSL). |
