Have you noticed the front garden looking a little "messy" lately? Maybe you’ve wondered why we didn’t cut back the “dead” stems, remove seed heads, or clear away the leaves last fall - or even earlier this spring. The reason is simple: nature needed it that way.
Those seed heads provided vital food for overwintering birds, and the dried stems and leaves served as cozy shelters and insulation for insects during the cold months. In fact, several moth species spend the winter as pupae nestled in leaf litter.
Now that we’ve had a few warm days, many of those caterpillars have likely awakened from their winter torpor - ready to transform into their next stage of life... or perhaps become a much-needed meal for hungry birds.
So thank you for your patience - and keep an eye on our garden as it comes back to life! | |
