Milne Mail: David & Joyce Milne Public Library, Weekly Newsletter
Friday, January 16, 2026

Hello, and Happy Friday!

At the David & Joyce Milne Public Library, we continually evaluate all of our offerings to make sure they serve our community well - providing valuable content, easy access, and sustainable use of library resources.

After a careful review of digital borrowing habits, usage statistics, and overall costs, we have made the decision to discontinue the hoopla digital service. This change will take effect on February 11th.

We recognize that many patrons have enjoyed using hoopla for movies, music, eBooks, audiobooks, and more. However, the way hoopla’s pricing works - where the library pays each time an item is borrowed - has proven to be unsustainable over time, especially as demand for digital content has grown and expanded across other platforms. These costs have limited our ability to reinvest in digital resources that benefit more users more consistently.

This decision reflects a broader trend within the library community. In recent months, a number of public libraries - large and small, including major systems such as the Boston Public Library - have reached similar decisions to discontinue hoopla after carefully assessing long-term sustainability and the financial impact of per-use digital pricing models.

Serving Seniors at the Library

After retirement, many seniors enjoy hobbies, travel, time with family and volunteering. But as the later stage of life can also present challenges, there are quite a few agencies and experts who offer help to this demographic.

Programs include building your legacy, learning to declutter, our Dementia-friendly caregivers group, and more.
