It's May and things are blooming all over at Dyer Library/Saco Museum! If you are spring cleaning this month, don't throw out that shirt that's missing a button or the necklace with a broken clasp - bring them to our Repair Cafe instead! We're doing our own cleaning and reorganizing by moving our Year-Round Book Sale and continuing to make improvements to our lovely historic buildings and grounds. And we're so excited to share our newest exhibit with you, which opens at the end of the month. We are going to delve into the fascinating work of museums: collecting, curating, preserving, researching, and presenting. You'll have the chance to see some of our oldest collections and newest treasures!

Repair Cafe

There's never been a better time to try to repair and reuse your belongings, instead of replacing them with something new! To help you, we are partnering with Age Friendly Saco to offer a Repair Cafe from 10:00AM-12:00PM on Saturday, May 17th. We'll have knowledgeable helpers on hand to mend clothes, repair jewelry, fix small appliances, answer plant questions, diagnose bike issues, and more! Bring your item to be repaired and we'll do our best, or point you in the right direction!

New Museum Exhibit

This summer, we are putting ourselves on display! "Behind Closed Doors: The Secrets of Museum Work" will open at the Saco Museum on May 24th.

Instead of focusing on a particular historical theme or time period, we are going to take a look at some behind-the-scenes museum work. Most people know that museums collect objects, put on exhibitions, and present programs for the public, but just how do museum staff go about doing those things? Where do museums obtain objects for their collections—and how do they decide what is appropriate to collect? How do staff take care of those objects so that future generations can enjoy them? How do they go about researching the items in the collections? And how does the staff use that information when putting together exhibitions and programs? Come visit us this summer to find out.

Behind Closed Doors will also feature some of the museum’s oldest collections, dating from the late 19th century, as well as recent acquisitions. On weekdays, museum staff will be
working on cataloguing and other projects in our large gallery and will usually be available to answer visitor questions.

Pride in the Park

We are thrilled to help kick off Pride Month at Saco Main Street's Pride in the Park! Come find our table at the celebration at the Foss Athletic Complex from 12:00 - 4:00 PM on May 31st - we'll be there to cheer on the runners, sign up new library patrons, and support and celebrate our LGBTQIA+ community!

New Book Sale Location

Beginning on Memorial Day Weekend, our year-round Book Sale is moving! Previously located in the entry area of the library, you will now be able to browse our wonderful selection of gently used hardcovers, paperbacks, children's books, puzzles, DVDs, and videogames in the Saco Museum. No admission fee is needed to visit our new Used Book Sale area, but as a reminder, Library Card holders and their guests always receive free admission to the Saco Museum!

Senior Series: Coffee & Chat

Please join us for another Senior Series event! This time we will be hosting Janine Fifield, a care coordinator with FCP Live-In, on Monday, May 19th from 10:00 - 11:00 AM. Janine will share more information on FCP Live-In and navigating the world of senior living options. Please bring your questions, and we'll bring the muffins!

Book Sale Donations

As we get closer to Summer, we're planning for the Annual Used Book Sale in August! In preparation for the big sale, we'll start accepting a wider range and  larger volume of donations than we usually request. If possible, please hold off on your larger book sale donations until June - this will give us a chance to clear out and organize our limited book storage space. Look for more details on the sale, including information about volunteering, in the coming weeks!

Park & Museum Passes

We partner with several local institutions to provide free and discounted park and museum passes for our library patrons, many of which are beginning to open up for the season!

Please visit our website for a complete list of Park  & Museum Passes and details for their use.
