JULY 2025 | LIBRARY NEWS

NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR
Our Annual Summer Reading Program is in full swing and we’ve had an amazing start! On the first day, we signed up close to 300 people to participate and had our biggest kick-off event to date! We are happy to see so many of you excited to participate this year.

It’s not too late to join in on the fun! We have lots of events planned for July-all supporting the theme of “Color Our World”. I’m looking forward to the show on July 30-“Laughing Matters”-as we all need a few more laughs in our life! We’ll wrap up this year, with our finale party at Power Up arcade, for qualifying participants. The adult program has some excellent prizes as well. I hope the summer reading program has encouraged your family to spend time reading each day.
We also had a big month with our Excel High School Program-we celebrated four graduates at the beginning of June! The students in the program worked hard to manage their families and work, all while taking online classes to obtain their high school diploma. We are honored to be a part of their journey. Congratulations, graduates!

In addition to our physical book collection, we have started adding purchased ebooks and audiobooks in the Libby App. Libby already offers a great selection of books that are shared within a consortium of MO libraries, but by purchasing some of our own titles, our library users get to read them first before they can be borrowed by other library patrons. A great feature on Libby is the “hold” feature, in which you can get “in line” to read a book. When purchasing titles, I look to see what books our patrons have on hold to help me decide what books to buy-so if you have a few books you want to read, just put them on hold.
My book recommendations for the month include:
  • My Next Breath: A Memoir, by Jeremy Renner
  • Broken Country, by Claire Leslie Hall
  • Atmosphere, by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Happy Reading-
Jamie Sparks, Director

The color of water [electronic resource] : a Black man's tribute to his white mother

The Picture of Dorian Gray
by Oscar Wilde

A beautiful young man, Dorian Gray, sits for a portrait. In the garden of the artist's house he falls into conversation with Lord Wotton, who convinces him that only beauty is worth pursuing. Gray wishes that his portrait, not himself, might age and show the effects of time. His wish comes true, and wild, hedonistic pursuits horribly disfigure the portrait.
