Canmore Public Library Hosts 2nd Annual Strong Women Event
Strong Women:  An Inspirational Evening

On October 22nd, the Canmore Public Library hosted its second annual Strong Women event, sponsored by the Canmore Rotary Club. Some 25 women, from high school age to grandmothers, joined seven presenters for an evening of inspiration that included motivation, movement, music, literature and art.

They had two keynote speakers. First, Margo Talbot shared the story of how she overcame suicidal depression, tapping into her inner strength to become a world renowned ice climber, author and speaker. Myrna Kootenay (spirit name: Anuka’tha Wiya), a Nakoda Sioux who lives at Morley, Alberta, overcame many losses and tragedies, and now organizes Grief and Loss Circles for the Stoney First Nation, supporting people to learn healthy coping mechanisms.

A variety of nibbles - sushi, fruit, vegetables, and cheese - were provided, along with delicious cookies made by Edible Life.
Local musicians Léa McRoy and Julia Lynx brought their wonderful musical talents

Cochrane Public Library Hosts Book Bash 2017
Fred Penner entertains the crowd at Cochrane Public Library

On October 21, 2017, the Cochrane Public Library was the 2017 host of the Book Bash Canadian Children’s Literature Festival! The Festival began in 2010 by the Toronto Public Library and the Muller Scholastic Endowment Fund. Every alternate year, Toronto opens up the opportunity for one Canadian library to hold the Festival, and this year, Cochrane was chosen!

To celebrate the Bash, Cochrane had award-winning authors Rukhsana Khan, Joan-Marie Galat, and local author Carrie Stanton give engaging and interactive presentations to the assembled children and families. They also had Calum Lykan (Scottish storyteller extraordinaire), face painters, a photo booth with the Ironhart Vanguard Knights, a bouncy castle, free books courtesy of Scholastic Canada and Cochrane's Friends of the Library group, a bilingual magic show, the Cochrane Fun Van, a craft room, puppet theatre and the one and only Fred Penner! It was an incredible day celebrating Canadian authors, illustrators, and performers.

The community was very excited about the event and the Cochrane Library received some amazing feedback from participants. They estimate that they had around 1,500-2,000 people attend the celebration, which isn’t bad for a chilly day in October! The staff at Cochrane Public Library all pulled together to make the event a success and they are all very proud of their efforts!

Longview Municipal Library Starts "Kindness Rocks" Program
Back in August, Longview Library started up a Kindness Rock program to help raise library awareness and encourage residents to get out and explore their community.

They started out by having an afternoon of rock painting in the library and writing kind, uplifting messages on them. The rocks were then hidden around the village for residents and visitors to find. Once found, they could either keep them or hide them for someone else to discover.

The program has inspired residents to create their own rocks and post pictures on the library's Facebook page, bringing even more awareness to the library. This was so much fun for residents of all ages, that the library plans to keep it going for as long as they can!

Village of Carbon Library Supports Community Partnership
Saturday, October 7 was a day of great success as the people of Carbon really came together and showed their support at the Security Block Party that took place in Carbon. Despite the cold breeze, over 100 people came out from 1-4 pm to enjoy a BBQ hot dog or a bowl of homemade chili. Handmade fall crafts and pies were also sold with all proceeds generously donated to this cause.

The fundraiser was hosted by the Village of Carbon Library in front of the Carbon Grocery Store in support of Andy Kim, his family and business. Due to continuous break-ins and theft, the Carbon Grocery Store was forced to install a higher quality security system. The goal was to raise enough money to cover the cost of the new upgrades which include a new cigarette case, better caging on the liquor, and a metal roll up door.

Over $10,000.00 was raised! The money raised was enough to help cover the cost of the security upgrades and the Carbon Grocery Store will continue to be open for business. They aren’t going anywhere, for they love the Carbon community. The Kim family was pleasantly surprised by the turnout, and humbled by the support and generosity from Carbon citizens, local businesses, and organizations.

Book Recommendation: Switch: How to Change Things When Change is Hard by Chip Heath & Dan Heath. "This is a book I read many years ago, and it is still one of my favorites. It is an informative and enjoyable change management book. The elephant, rider, and path concept about change can be applied to anything in life. The book is full of inspiring real-life stories, for example, Jerry Sternin of Save the Children, saving the lives of thousands of malnourished children in Vietnam in six months without funding; college student Paul Butler, saving the endangered parrots in St. Lucians and St. Vincents, etc. This book will give you an in-depth and hopeful look into how change works and how to improve your situations."
